Anyone interested in trying a well-known TCM formulation for liver issues? it's called xiao yao wan / xiao yao pian 逍 遥 [URL='https://www.mdbg.net/chinese/dictionary?page=worddict&wdrst=0&wdqb=wan2#']丸 / [/URL]逍 遥 . Here's a description for what it is good for, besides tackling hepatic issues:

"In [the] modern clinic, it is applicable to Chronic Hepatitis; Pleurisy; Chronic Gastritis; Peptic Ulcer; Irregular Menstruation; Uterine Bleeding; Leukorrhea; Anemia; Pelvic Inflammatory Disease; Breast Fibroids; Optic Nerve Atrophy; Central Retinitis."

"...a well-known ancient Chinese herbal medicine that's used as a natural remedy for depression & stress management, as well as other manifestations of Liver Qi stagnation, including premenstrual syndrome (PMS)."

"This formula is particularly designed for the syndromes caused by depressed liver and deficient spleen and failure of spleen in transportation. Thanks to its powerful function in reconciling liver and spleen, it has been one of highly regarded and mostly recommended herbal remedies by generation of TCM doctors. By the way, the word “Xiao Yao”, meaning “free and unfettered”, is taken from Zhuangzi, one of the most influential Chinese philosophical books written by Zhuangzi more than 2,300 years ago. As its name suggested, this pill is literally capable of making people, especially women, happy again."

Papaya seeds make mammalian male animals sterile . There are even some programs targeted on development a male contraceptive pill using papaya seeds.

Thanks for the caveat. Good to know there's another candidate other than gossypol! What's the mechanism involved in the case of papaya seeds ... care to elaborate?

Yes. As it happened a long time ago, I'm rather hazy as to the results of supplementing it. Anyway, I've found that minimizing fat/oil intake has helped considerably. I don't cook food in oil anymore.

You might be interested in the Ayurvedic combo herb remedy called Liv52, Liv52 DS (DS = double strength). . . DS is of course more economical. [1] Liv 52: Herbal | eBay [2] https://www.amazon.com/liv-52/s?ie=UTF8&page=1&rh=i:aps,k:liv-52 [3] Liv.52 by Himalaya Herbal Healthcare
Looks good. also, using a straight up kutki powder is probably the most cost effective, and kutki has beneficial effects to the liver that exceed tonics like milk thistle, etc.: https://www.amazon.com/Picrorhiza-Crafted-natural-habitat-Optimum/dp/B003Q5MGCQ

Yes, Kutki [Picrorhiza kurrora] is good for liver issues like Hepatitis C and cirrhosis. It's even used for diabetes [reducing insulin resistance] and because of its cytotoxic properties, it has potential benefits for cancer patients. In TCM, it is called Hu Huang Lian and is considered inferior to Huang Lian [Coptis chinensis], a look alike. C. chinensis is also used for relieving liver issues and lowering blood glucose. Long term use of Kutki may be unwise as I remember reading a scientific study showing adverse on the liver of experimental mice. Hmm, what a paradox. Other botanicals traditionally used for liver health are : cantaury, Swertia chirata and gentiana.

"Unlike UDCA, TUDCA is not an FDA-approved medication in the US. UDCA is also known as URSO or ursodiol. UDCA is approved for the treatment of patients with primary biliary cirrhosis, which is an autoimmune liver disorder ... The FDA issued a warning about TUDCA bulk products from China that are being used for research purposes. These products may be misbranded and are entering the US without passing any checks."

The phrasing seems alarmist and inflammatory, particularly the "without passing any checks" part. Have a look at the actual FDA warning.

Fortunately, the papaya seed extract used as male contraceptive is reversible. It takes five weeks for the reversal, following discontinuance.

On the paper. Who knows about real life?
