“Writing in the journal, NEJM Evidence, D.P. Devanand, professor of psychiatry and neurology at Columbia, with Murali Doraiswamy, professor of psychiatry and medicine at Duke, said they recruited 107 volunteers with an average age of 71, and had them either do crossword puzzles or play computer video games (depending on what cohort they were assigned to), over a period of many weeks.

The results? Participants who did crossword puzzles fared much better in terms of memory loss or lack thereof compared to those who played video games, as measured by cognitive tests and changes in brain size (measured with an MRI), over the course of 78 weeks.“

“These figures may not sound alarming, however what researchers found was that participants who consumed one artificially sweetened drink per day were 2.96 times more likely to suffer an ischaemic stroke and 2.89 times more likely to be diagnosed with dementia due to Alzheimer's disease.”

“In cases where picking at your nose damages internal tissues, critical species of bacteria have a clearer path to the brain, which responds to their presence in ways that resemble signs of Alzheimer's disease.”

“A team of researchers led by scientists from Griffith University in Australia ran tests with a bacteria called Chlamydia pneumoniae, which can infect humans and cause pneumonia. The bacteria has also been discovered in the majority of human brains affected by late-onset dementia.”

I do think one’s mental outlook and how someone perceive’s their environment and the greater world, has a huge effect on one’s appearance. Research is finding that one’s perception of life is a heavy influence in the quality of their health.

Our thoughts are light. We are made up of photons of light. Light is truth. If we choose to dwell in the truth, in the light, we will reap illumination, knowledge and understanding. And an overflow of better health.

If we choose to dwell in darkness, we will reap the result of that dark thinking. And again, this reflects on one’s health. People really do die from broken hearts, which are hearts that are bogged down with hopelessness, bitterness and unforgiveness.

“Alzheimer's disease involves decreased mitochondrial activity and low levels of the uncoupling proteins. There is evidence that milk drinkers are protected against dementia (Yamada, et al., 2003). Cancer involves increased activity of the fatty acid synthase enzymes. Increased calcium consumption beneficially affects both sets of enzymes, uncoupling proteins and fatty acid synthase.” -Ray Peat

“In white hair, the amount of tryptophan is higher than in hair of any other color. Although serotonin and tryptophan are very important during rapid growth, their presence in senile tissues is probably closely associated with the processes of decline. The hair loss that occurs in hypothyroidism, postpartum syndrome, and with the use of drugs such as St. John's wort (which can also cause the “serotonin syndrome”) could be another effect of excess serotonin.” -Ray Peat

“Keeping the TV on while you sleep can lead to getting less sleep. Without adequate sleep, you have a higher chance of experiencing a variety of health effects, such as:

  • high blood pressure
  • weakened immunity
  • memory loss
However, the risks go beyond the standard effects of sleep deprivation.

A 2019 studyTrusted Source found that sleeping with artificial light, such as that from the TV, was associated with an increased risk for obesity. The study found that this risk was increased even if there was no decrease in the quantity or quality of sleep that participants received.

So, even if you’re getting a great night’s rest in front of the TV, it might still hurt your health in the long run.”

“The activity of the sympathetic nervous system increases with aging, so salt restriction is exacerbating one of the basic problems of aging. Chronically increased activity of the sympathetic (adrenergic) nervous system contributes to capillary leakage, insulin resistance (with increased free fatty acids in the blood), and degenerative changes in the brain (Griffith and Sutin, 1996).” -Ray Peat

“Other protective effects of increased sodium are that it improves immunity (Junger, et al., 1994), reduces vascular leakiness, and alleviates inflammation (Cara, et al., 1988). All of these effects would tend to protect against the degenerative diseases, including tumors, atherosclerosis, and Alzheimer’s disease. The RAA system appears to be crucially involved in all kinds of sickness and degeneration, but the protective effects of sodium are more basic than just helping to prevent activation of that system.” -Ray Peat

“Environmental enrichment, learning, high altitude, and thyroid hormone promote the formation of new mitochondria, and stimulate stem cell proliferation. At least in some laboratories, 20% oxygen, approximately the amount as in the atmosphere, suppresses the proliferation of stem cells (He, et al., 2007). This was the unphysiologically high concentration of oxygen used in Hayflick's cell cultures. At high altitudes, where tissues are exposed to less oxygen, and more carbon dioxide, there is a lower incidence of all the degenerative diseases, including cancer, heart disease, and dementia.” Ray Peat

“Stereotypes are important. When a very thin person with high blood pressure visits a doctor, hypothyroidism isn't likely to be considered; even high TSH and very low T4 and T3 are likely to be ignored, because of the stereotypes. (And if those tests were in the healthy range, the person would be at risk for the “hyperthyroid” diagnosis.) But remembering some of the common adaptive reactions to a thyroid deficiency, the catabolic effects of high cortisol and the circulatory disturbance caused by high adrenaline should lead to doing some of the appropriate tests, instead of treating the person's hypertension and “under nourished” condition.” -Ray Peat

“Aldosterone secretion increases during the night, and its rise is greater in depressed and stressed people. It inhibits energy metabolism, increases insulin resistance, and increases the formation of proinflammatory substances in fat cells (Kraus, et al., 2005). During aging, salt restriction can produce an exaggerated nocturnal rise in aldosterone.” -Ray Peat

“In recent decades, the prevalence of congestive heart failure has increased tremendously, so that it is now often called an epidemic. Hyponatremia (too little salt, or too much water) is a recognized "risk factor" for congestive heart failure. In the failing heart, the muscle cells are swollen, causing the heart wall to stiffen, weakening its ability to pump. Osmotically shrinking the cells can restore their function.

The swollen heart, like any muscle, loses the ability to quickly and completely relax, and so it doesn't fill adequately between contractions. Elastic tissues, such as arteries and lungs, stiffen when they are over-hydrated, losing their normal functions. In small blood vessels, swelling narrows the channel, increasing resistance to the flow of blood.

When people force themselves to drink a certain amount of water every day, even when they don't feel thirsty, they are activating complex adaptive processes unnecessarily. Thirst is the best guide to the amount of fluid needed.

When extra water consumption is combined with a low salt diet--as physicians have so often recommended--a healthy person can adapt easily, but for a hypothyroid person it can have disastrous effects.” -Ray Peat
