How Bad Is It If Your Stool Are Hard And You Only Have A BM Every Other Day?

I was wondering if it's a sign of bad digestion or something? I think it's not that bad as I never have to strain or anything when I go to the bathroom (It takes me 5 seconds max). But I think I read somewhere that your stool are supposed to be very soft and happen everyday. I'm satisfied with my diet currently, but I know how important digestion is so if it's a bad sign I'll do some experiment with different foods but if it's not a big deal I'd rather not. What do you guys think?

I do eat a carrot everyday and currently eat 0 starches, but there might be other things I could do like maybe eat less cheese or more fruits (currently only drink OJ for fruits). I also don't eat coconut oil and I think I remember something about it helping for that. But if it's not that big of a deal I'd rather keep this diet for a while.

Peat has said bowel movements should have no form, me and nwo2012 call them "man patties". Like cow patties, but from men. Any kind of form indicates constipation. The movement also happens in one swift move, done and over.

I find it optimal when I have a movement soon as I wake up, then another one after breakfast....another one afternoon sometime, then another one after dinner, before the sun goes down.

Hi Charlie,

Can you please point me to the source for this: any kind of form indicates constipation/poo should have no form? Thanks!

I suspect a semantic/communication breakdown. :)
If a poop has no form,
ya got diarrhea.

Poo with no form and water is diarrhea. Just poo with no form is "man patty".

Well crap(pun intended), maybe it was me that said that. :? I have put an email into the man himself. Definitely want to get this clarified and not be passing along wrong information.

I know me and nwo2012 agree that we feel our best when our bowel movements consist of man patties.

So...
this desirable poop with no form...

Would another way to express it be
that the poop is solid but malleable?
Like...(what?...tryin' to think...)
semi-firm mashed potatoes maybe?
Or pureed beans?

Let's put it this way:
if you pooped on the ground,
it would come out in a tubular form
molded by the anal opening,
but then when it lands on the ground
it would reform under the force of impact/gravity
into a neat, semi-symmetrical, non-watery form?

Right. Like a cow patty, or mash potatoes if you will. There is no water like diarrhea. And it doesn't cloud up the bowl when you flush it, like diarrhea would. The water that is already in the bowl stays clear even during the flush. It just really soft poo.

Wow that was fast:

Ray, A while back I thought I had read that you said bowel movements that are normal would not have form. And that any form would indicate constipation. Is this true?

Ray Peat said:
No, I think they should be formed but not hard, not pellet-like.

Boy do I feel stupid. Sorry about that everyone. :( :hiding

I still stand behind that I feel the best when man patties are happening.

It has a form.
But the form is flexible or malleable.
It is not rigid or dogmatic. :)

Ha ha..the Bristol Stool Chart, I've relied on it for years.

So, getting back to the Original Poster....A hard stool every other day means you're constipated.

I see, so what kind of effect being constipated have on your health?
