Can too low estrogen cause hair shedding/thinning?

Hello everyone,

I have had hair shedding and slow progression MPB for the last 3 years.

Every time I look down I see hairs falling. However, for the amount of hair fall I have, my MPB progression has seemed quite slow.

My temples have receded to NW1, with some slight diffuse thinning.

I have been on low-dose topical finasteride for the last 2.5 years (dose ranging from 0.05 - 0.1 mg every other day applied topically).

My lab results came back recently as:

  • Dihydrotestosterone 1.48 pg/mL (Below Normal, range 2.3 - 11.6)
  • Total Testosterone 419 (range 264-916)
  • Free Testosterone 6.2 (range 9.3 - 26.5)
  • Total Estrogens 59 (56-213)
  • Estradiol 14.6 (range 7.6 - 42.6)
  • Progesterone 0.5 (range 0.0 - 0.5)
  • Ferritin 61
  • SHBG 30.3 (range 16.5 - 55.9)
  • Growth Hormone, Serum <0.1 (range 0.0 - 10.0)
  • LH 8.5 (range 1.7-8.6)
  • Iron Saturation - 54%
Given that my DHT and Test levels are low, could my low estrogen be the cause of my hair shedding?

I am on such a low dose of Fin, I don't think it could be the cause of my shedding.

Could it be low estrogen causing the shedding?

My copper is also on the low end of normal, and I have hemochromatosis. I have had off/on copper deficiency for the last few years.

I am not sure my DHEA I will need to check. My T4 was at 6.6 ug/dL.

And my iron saturation is high because of hemochromatosis, I am actively avoiding iron now to reduce the saturation

Be careful with breads from the supermarket, even sourdough, they add iron to those and it raised my iron saturation from 29 to 31% in 2 months

Yes, in my experience. Many people talk about it as a side effect of aromatase inhibitors. High iron will cause thinning too so you've got a bit of a double whammy there.
