There was a tribe living downstream from an industrial run off area and a large quantity of a toxic substance (don't recall which, maybe glycophosphate) contaminated the water.

It was attributed to the consumption of Brazil nuts which is a big part of the natives diet.
The selenium content is tremendous in these nuts. From
We have to occupy the place in the presence of heavy metals.

Heavy metals & antagonistic trace elements:
Cadmium --> Zinc
Lead --> Calcium, Molybdenum, Sulfur
Aluminum --> Magnesium, Calcium, Phosphorus, Fluorine
Mercury --> Sulfur + Selenium
Arsenic --> Selenium
Fluorine, chlorine --> I (+ Se) (for thyroid).

My guess is it has nothing to do with brazil nuts particularly, but rather their natural diet in general and especially lack of commercial foods: (fortified) wheat, pufa cooking oils, etc. made them more resilient than the others.
