They raise extra cellular serotonin within hours. It doesn't take weeks for the drug to stop SERT from facilitating reuptake.
We can really only infer a method of action as far as the sometimes-benefits. We do know certain things, many of them raise allopregnenolone, and they all eventually down regulate 5HT2A receptors. But they are most likely pretty crude drugs with an unnecessarily circuitous mode of action and with many side effects even compared to other pharmaceutical options.
Doesn't mean useful outcomes never happen with them.
