Dr. McDougall is famous for recommending a "starch based," vegan diet of beans, potatoes, peas, corn, greens etc. to everyone unconditionally for around 40 years. The Mcdougall diet is under 10% fat and he believes it's the only correct human diet. It's ideal for all people at all times.

The McDougalls haven't aged well imo. Their professional camera setup and the new tech is making them look much better and isn't telling the story as well as the older videos below. I'm not trying to be mean but I've just wondered whether it's healthy to eat this way over the long term.

This is video of him one year earlier on a different setup. He's 74 I believe (maybe 75).

Here they are 7 years ago. His wife is 69 here and I think she looks bad for her age. He's a year younger than his wife.

Agree with you they don't look well. They're vegans. No meat, super low fat. They are looking kind of like skeletons, especially Mary.

I heard he is trying to gain weight, which is why he has that much fat. Also, his wife really doesn't look that bad, imo.

I don't know why the heck people can't just advocate a balanced diet, over the long term. That's what I like about Peaty eating - it's just pretty balanced. Fruit, veggies, honey, sugar, rice, roots, shoots, and nose-to-tail protein, shellfish. It's just so sensible.

To me this was like hearing Gary Taubes or the ghost of Robert Atkins became a fruitarian. I thought people would be shocked but maybe nobody knows who he is. I only found out about him a couple years ago because he's a spectacular communicator.

His diet is the complete opposite of a Ray Peat diet. Ray Peat would say the redeeming component of a vegan diet is all the fruit and his diet restricts fruit.

I've always thought this type of diet would be especially hard on Europeans. I don't know if it's the vegan part as much as the very low fat (maybe both). And imo it did a number on him and his wife.

This health guru also broke a bunch of bones getting out of bed in his mid 60s by his own words.

We tried to eat like McDougall recommended back in the 80s. We lasted about 9 months but we didn't really follow him correctly because we ate peanuts at the time, too. We were hungry all the time. I don't understand how any vegan functions with low or insufficient protein. I am surprised they are eating nuts. The cookbooks they published at that time did include some fruits. I remember a banana-raisin cookie that was actually pretty good.

Far too low protein. I do high starch plus a pound minimum of lean beef per day and like the way I feel on it. I’ve also tried vegan or near vegan high starch before. Never again.

Oh right thanks. It slipped my mind. The guy has many lectures explaining that you should avoid excess protein. His diet is 12% protein and 8% fat. So that may be a factor as well.
