Regular Palpatations and anxiousness

Hi everyone,

I have been eating this way for about 4-5 months.

I am getting salt each day (3-4 teaspoons), eating fruit, milk (with extra sugar in it) 2-3 litres, OJ 2 litres, coconut oil, lots of high cocoa chocolate, beef gelatin 5-6 tablespoons of great lakes, eating good organic cheese and I have built up to two thyroid -s per day. I think that amount will increase as at the moment I still havent hit my correct stable dose. Still looking for a decent aspirin that can be taken in higher doses.

I have been experiencing heart palpatations/fluttering and skipping beats several times a day. No pain at all but it only happens at times when I am feeling anxious/nervous. My temperature is rarely in the right range at the moment as it is clear I have a lot of healing to do.

These heart palpalations etc concern me. Has anyone else had this in the early stages? Can anyone give me an insight as to what is going on?

Also, as I am still trying to get things right, my moods are up and down, often down. Recently this has been getting worse which suggests to me that im either missing important nutrients or something else. I am starting to keep a food dary to look at my nutrients weekly on cronometer so this is the next step.

I think for me is the fact that I am still not able to eat enough. My appetite is poor at the best of times (Years of not eating, often not eating all day just because I would forget to, and heavy athletic training).

Can anyone give me insight/experiences and any advise on the above would be appreciated. Im familiar with the requirements of liver/oysters etc and include liver and sometimes (Not often) oysters but get plenty from the cocoa chocolate in regards to those nutrients.

Thanks all :):

Regarding heart palpitations, I heard a RP interview yesterday where RP said that salt could cause blood pressure if thyroid function and calcium are low. So maybe one of these things isn't fixed yet. I would experiment with cutting the salt intake, because I remember that before Peating, salt would give me palpitations. But I'm proposing it just as an experiment, I'm not confident it will fix the problem.

Thanks J,

Can you point me in the direction of that particular interview?

Thanks

Kettle, I have had heart flutters, skipped beats, etc on and off for most of my life, and I do seem to notice them more when I am under stress. I've seen a heart specialist who listened and looked at the EKG and doesn't seem particularly concerned -- just called them "irregularities" and told me to back off the caffeine (which I'm not going to do). They come and go, but I have noticed them again since I've started upping my salt intake. I figure I've got a lot of things to balance out. Taking a small amount of magnesium has seemed to help in the past, took some yesterday which seemed to help.

Thanks for the input crX,

I am back to normal now. Found I was over dosing on the thyroid which is about the only thing I am still trying to balance now. My salt intake is very very high and has made a massive difference in keeping me calm, switched on and energetic.

It is amazing the difference from person to person in what they need.

Ray Peat mixes philosophy and science for that reason I suppose.

Yes, your salt intake is very high. So is your gelatin. Not making a judgement at all, just guess I'm being a little conservative to start with. Did you start with a little bit of salt and then work up to more? How did you determine that 3-4 teaspoons is what you need? I'm still a product of my upbringing with a father with heart disease. Guess it's sort of drummed into me about too much salt being a bad thing, even though now I don't really believe it, old ways of thinking die hard It's like I'm dealing with some hard core substance by adding salt, and I'm watching for some adverse reaction like I'm trying a new drug for the first time :)

Took me a while to stop worrying about downing salt. Niggling thoughts in my head about possible damage I am doing. All of that has gone now. I gradually increased the amount. From 1 teaspoon a day and just adding more as I felt stress/anxiety creeping in . I have now hit an amount that seems to keep me in good shape all day. About two tablespoons give or take a little. Having even a small amount dramatically reduces my stress level. Also combining some salt with a few minutes bag breathing makes me as calm and confident as Buddha himself.

Im taking probably about 30-40gm Gelatin a day in OJ, not really a massive amount. I was taking more but reduced it as more wasn't necessary. This has had a big effect on reducing inflammation and healing some old training injuries (Chostochondritis was one of them which had plagued me for 11 years). There is still plenty more healing to be done im sure.

Im very lucky as I am quickly increasing metabolism thanks to starting with low body fat. Im currently at about 6% so if the stored PUFA is in small amounts. Before this I have not touched PUFA for a long time anyway thanks to Paleo and plenty of coconut oil. Im currently taking between 3-5 tablesppons a day coconut oil which also goes well with the salt (Not at the same time, it hums and makes me gag if I try to swallow that combo haha)

Also, I am only a few months in! So its still early days on the positive effects.

That's interesting. I imagine if you are pretty active then you would need a good deal of salt as well. I am not as active as usual these days, and it has really cooled of here very suddenly so I don't think I"ll need as much salt as I will when summer comes.

Yesterday I think I overdid it. I've been salting my oj/milk drinks and yesterday I did one in the afternoon with 1/4 tsp and I came down with a pretty bad headache last night, and the muscles in my neck and shoulders felt pretty tense. I think I'm better off just remembering to salt my food to taste, putting a pinch or two in my drinks, and then upping the dose if I'm feeling anxious. That way it'll be more in tune with my body is telling me it needs.

One thing I also did yesterday that I know I shouldn't do is put sugar in my cafe latte -- I just go through the roof, like being on speed. I was thinking that maybe now that I was doing salt this wouldn't happen, so I gave it a try. That along with a bit to much salt prior may have my body some trauma :)

Thanks for your sharing your experience. I feel as you do that I've got a lot of healing to do, and for me a lot of it has to do with things in did in the past in the name of good health (fish oil for example).

Hardly anyone around me eats salt. They all think its bad bad bad. And me, now that I have worked up to it slowly, can down a 1/2 tsp of it and still crave more sometimes.

I did have some reservations though about salt when I started up on it. All the "salt is bad" poop was ingrained in me, but I just hunkered down and went for it.

I had a friend tell me yesterday she doesnt eat any salt at all. Then she went on about how good her metabolism is and she is healthy. Even though she is prolly carrying and 35-40% body fat. I am slowly trying to bring around but I dunno. Most people need an authority to tell them something to believe it.

Another story off topic. Have a friend having kidney stones and they keep coming. I told her she needs to start getting calcium, fix her thyroid, get her PTH down, and just generally go Peaty. She wouldnt hear nothing of it. So, yesterday, she is at the urologists, and the Dr. tells her they need to start addressing why she keeps getting the stones. Then the Dr. tells her its due to lack of calcium and messed up hormones to do with the thyriod. She said, thats what my friend said, Dr. said, your friend is right. Needless to say this person refuses to drink milk or make the correct changes. Depressing. :(

Those health notions that we have are so ingrained and so pervasive in everything we hear, that unless people take the time to educate themselves it's hard to get off the bandwagon.

Even when you do educate yourself, its hard! I kept questioning myself over and over about the salt. It really was ingrained that the stuff is life threatening!

The news is starting to seep through but most ignore it as a "Fluke" or flawed study.

The way I see it I was on my way to an early grave with how I was, so worst case scenario, I will go kaput no earlier than I was going to thanks to all the stress, and when I do I will be so dosed up on salt I wont care :):
