I am coming more to see this point you make @Rinse & rePeat. I think that ploughing fields with the horse would have been stressful physically but from my own experience there is something gratifying about the task even though it uses tractors today. Working in the ground close to nature planting is something meaningful, gratifying and rewarding, this would balance out the physical stress, along with the horse and plough there would be the connection formed with the horse and tending their needs as they tend yours, a connection of reciprocity.
Well that is true, look we have now, people paying for someone to mow their lawn while they then pay to go to a place to go run on a treadmill.

“Since tryptophan is the precursor of serotonin, the amount of tryptophan in the diet can have important effects on the way the organism responds to stress, and the way it develops, adapts, and ages.” -Ray Peat

“The fatigue produced by “over-training” is probably produced by a tryptophan and serotonin overload, resulting from catabolism of muscle proteins and stress-induced increases in serotonin. Muscle catabolism also releases a large amount of cysteine, and cysteine, methionine, and tryptophan suppress thyroid function (Carvalho, et al., 2000).” -Ray Peat

“On the tryptophan-poor diet, the amount of serotonin in the brain decreased. When brain serotonin decreases, the level of testosterone in male animals increases. More than 20 years ago, a chemical (p-chlorophenylalanine) that inhibits serotonin synthesis was found to tremendously increase libido.” -Ray Peat

“Whey has been promoted as a protein supplement, but it contains a slightly higher proportion of tryptophan than milk does. Cheese (milk with the whey removed) contains less tryptophan. Some people have been encouraged to eat only the whites of eggs, “to avoid cholesterol,” but the egg albumin is rich in tryptophan.” -Ray Peat

“Stress, exercise, and darkness, increase the release of free fatty acids, and so promote the liberation of tryptophan and formation of serotonin.” -Ray Peat

“I think these facts imply that excessive tryptophan, estrogen, and polyunsaturated fats contribute significantly, maybe decisively, to the degenerative changes that occur in aging. Experiments have separately shown that reducing dietary tryptophan or unsaturated fats can extend the healthy lifespan, and several antiestrogenic interventions (removal of the pituitary, or supplementing with progesterone) can slow age-related changes and delay degenerative diseases. Since these factors interact, each tending to promote the others, and also interact with exogenous toxins, excess iron accumulation, and other stressors, it would be reasonable to expect greater results when several of the problems are corrected at the same time.“ -Ray Peat

“Researchers from Denmark and France found in the paper Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences that prolonged use of the commonly consumed painkiller could have some nasty side effects.

Net Doctor reported: “The small study, made up of just 31 male participants aged 18 to 35 years old, showed that taking ibuprofen increased the risk of compensated hypogonadism – a hormone imbalance whereby an individual has higher levels of luteinizing hormone (LH) than testosterone.

“For the research, participants were split into two groups. one group received 600mg or ibuprofen twice a day two weeks before and 30 days after an exercise session while the other acted as a control group. For the ibuprofen group, blood tests showed an 18% decrease in testosterone after 14 days, rising to a 23% decrease after 44 days.”

What is particularly alarming about the study is the participants were consuming around a third of what is considered a safe daily dose.”

“Earlier this year a woman shared how she lost 130 pounds by making simple lifestyle choices, including walking 10,000 steps a day. "I started with a single step. Reminder that even baby steps are still steps in the right direction," she said.”

A 2021 study published in the Journal of Sport and Health Science found that a higher step count can be linked to a lower risk of premature death and cardiovascular events. Walking 10,000 steps a day significantly lowered the risk of all-cause mortality in middle-aged and older adults by up to 40 percent, while lowering the risk of a cardiovascular event by 35 percent.”

“Heat, hypoglycemia, running, and some types of shock are known to stimulate growth hormone secretion, sometimes to levels ten or twenty times higher than normal. (Two kinds of stress that usually don't increase GH are cold and stimulus-deprivation.) I consider the growth hormone to be, almost as much as prolactin, a stress-inducible hormone. That's why I reasoned that, if an endocrinologist as good as Sapolsky can misunderstand GH to that degree, the public is even more likely to misunderstand the nature of the material, and to believe that it somehow acts just on muscle, fat, and bones.“ -Ray Peat
Any idea what Sapolsky misunderstood about growth hormone, according to Ray?

Maybe that growth hormone is a good thing?

“If growth hormone is given to children or adults with normal growth, who do not need growth hormone, serious unwanted effects may occur because levels in the body become too high. These effects include the development of diabetes; abnormal growth of bones and internal organs such as the heart, kidneys, and liver; atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries); and hypertension (high blood pressure).”
