Water Retention

I know there have been threads about water retention before but I'm confused about the conflicting explanations of it. I know in this forum most say salt and sugar decrease water retention but on other sites and lot of other 'experts' say that you need to drink more water and decrease sodium intake to lower water retention. Putting the scientific explanations aside since I've looked into it already, personally I am leaning more towards what Peat is saying since I've been drinking around 2 litres of water everyday for the past couple of months to lower my puffy cheeks with no visible changes taking place. I drank water even when I wasn't thirsty. So I just wanted to know if I should increase my salt intake and if this worked for you. Thanks

Salt just makes me very thirsty and raises my blood pressure.
I find that if I don't eat too much salt, I am not very thirsty and I drink a more appropriate amount of fluids.
