Wow, thanks for letting me know about this condition; describes me to a tee!
Does anyone have any thoughts on rectifying these issues?
Calcium intake is supposed to release histamine and reduce stores. Methionine/SAM-e will reduce histamine by deactivating it via methylation (way more effective). Vitamin C also helps by increasing adrenal activity (norepinephrine and epinephrine) which can help reduce release of histamine from mast cells. Copper does the same and also needed for DAO.
Ideally, increased copper and vitamin C intake from the right foods such as certain tropical fruits which are high in copper, liver, dark chocolate, potatoes etc can help increase norepinephrine/epinephrine which increases sympathetic activity. Through certain adrenergic receptors (I believe beta-2), they can inhibit mast cell release of histamine.
Low cortisol can also make the problem worse because it controls immune response. Really the problem comes only with some histadelics. Its when their adrenal activity drops really low, thus histamine is not controlled well. So most are pretty good and have little issues relatively, they are driven because of it. If it is so severe that adrenal activity is nonexistent that's where the problem lies. Excess stress can do it, and of course some are more prone depending on diet.
Methionine/SAM-e reduces the histamine load effectively for severe cases.
Increasing vitamin C and copper intake is an easy step and may be all you need to control it. If its not helping much, I suggest you try 200-400mg SAM-e to see how it affects you.
