It's more complicated than just dosage. Both low and high doses have been well tolerated by many. I think of pregnenolone as a substrate used to manufacture a multitude of the downstream hormones. So any positive or negative effect it has would depend on what your body produces from it and vary greatly from individual to individual.

--------------------------------------------------Cholesterol-------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------Pregnenolone----------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------Progesterone____________________________________________________DHEA----------------------------------------
------------------------Cortisol________________________________________________Testosterone or Esterol-----------------------------

One needs to be sure to manage stress prior to supplementing pregnenolone. Or it may have an undesired effect.
For example, if a person is under great stress , the "pregnenolone steal" might serve just to rob pregnenolone being utilized for normal dhea production and use it to overproduce cortisol.

Some thrive on smaller doses. I seem to tolerate very large doses with no negative issues. But, again , this effect varies a lot from person to person. If you experience a benefit , and helps to balance your hormones , the use it. If not, discontinue. As to dose, you will have to experiment to see what works for you.

Since the HPTA axis serves to regulate / modulate the stress and inflammatory response , it's output will be affected by an overproduction of cortisol for sure.

So, Cholesterol is used to produce Pregnenolone (you can naturally produce no more than around 10mg each day I think) , which is then used to make all the downstream hormones Progesterone, DHEA , Cortisol , Testosterone , Esterol. Supplementation , in theory, gives your body access to more pregnenolone than it can naturally produce in a 24 hour period which can be used by the body to produce more of what downstream hormones it needs. Probably much safer than HRT.
