My sister drank a stunning, HUGE, amount of water, and later found that she was borderline diabetic.

Yes I think that the huge amount of thirst & drinking liquids can be related to some level of kidney failure, which is common in diabetics. So now that you mention it, my sister had chronic kidney disease along with her diabetes insipidus. She was always encouraged to throttle her drinking, to little effect.
