Summary:
Probiotic use can result in a significant accumulation of bacteria in the small intestine that can result in disorienting brain fogginess as well as rapid, significant belly bloating, investigators report.

When investigators looked further, they found large colonies of bacteria breeding in the patients' small intestines, and high levels of D-lactic acid being produced by the bacteria lactobacillus' fermentation of sugars in their food, says Dr. Satish S.C. Rao, director of neurogastroenterology/motility and the Digestive Health Clinical Research Center at the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University.

A more accurate title would be "Lactobacillus probiotics use [...]". Personally I do believe in the distinction between beneficial and harmful bacterias, and that the lack of the first (leading to the uncontested domination of the second) can cause health issues as thousands of testimonies from people using antibiotics have pointed to. Not that it requires probiotics use, diets have been shown to influence the gut microbiota (for example, less meat and specifically less red meat, appears to be beneficial) since different types thrive on different types of food.

But I wonder if the Bifidobacterium genus could be entirely beneficial, since they don't produce lactic acid, and have plenty of scientific studies showing good effects.
