Is aged cascara a stimulant laxative?

It works a treat for me, keeps me regular, if not slightly watery, it still beats hard stools. Is it a stimulant laxative though?

Not sure what a stimulant laxative means exactly, but the emodin in cascara sagrada apparently does not behave like the serotonin-raising laxatives.

a stimulant laxative if I can explain it properly, is when body gets used to a laxative and needs it to work? Ie ones that draw water into colon aren't as bad as ones that stimulate the bowel?

IIRC from the article, emodin helps reduce intestinal inflammation, thereby increasing the gut lumen. So if inflammation and constriction were contributing to constipation, this can help remove/reduce such bottle necks. It may also support metabolism, so that normal peristalsis operates better, without doing it with increased stress hormones like serotonin.

I took this for a week, and I find it not working anymore. I'm wondering if something is wrong in my gut and stopping any supplements from working?
