What actually is constipation physiologically?

I rarely see anybody talking about what actually is- ie. what is happening in the large intestine when somebody is constipated.

Is it a lack of neuromuscular stimulaton of the intestine? Or is it inflammation of the intestine which reduces the size of the lumen and slows transit time?

Both. It is many reasons, why things slow down, like the many reason i have had a difficult time cleaning a straw for reuse.
