So I haven't shampooed my hair since April 10, 2021. I don't know when I officially stopped using soap completely on my body. I think it's been around 4 weeks. Besides shampoo, and soap being endocrine disruptors and wanting to lessen my toxic load, I'm also doing this to experience the way we're meant to clean ourselves by doing water only washing. Also my hair hates haircare products, so I'm finally giving it what it wants. When I was a kid, I used to swim in the pool everyday and wash my hair everyday with Pantene. In my second year of college, my hair wasn't growing, so I went down the no poo rabbit hole. I tried the baking soda and apple cider vinegar method, and went through the adjustment period of having the silicones in my hair being taken out. I was able to wash my hair every 4 days after the adjustment period, but it made my hair smell like feet. I tried shampoo bars and my hair still got greasy everyday. I tried "training my hair" for my hair to get used to being washed less often and it didn't work. My hair was still greasy by the end of the day. I tried salon quality shampoo, I was still dealing with a greasy scalp by the end of the day. I tried "natural" sulfate free shampoo, and it was still greasy. All shampoo and low poo methods gave me was a greasy scalp and frizzy, flat hair. Now I'm doing water only washing because it's my last and only option. I'm going into week 6, but I'm still optimistic. I'm so determined to make this work, even if I have to leave with a greasy bun for a year, then I'll do. It was at its worse at weeks 2 and 3, which seems to be the normal with everyone that I watch who've done this before. As for no soap, I just did it in the hopes that I would smell less. My feet don't stink anymore, which is good. My underarms still smell, but it's not as bad as before. The most I use in terms of products is shaving my legs with conditioner to use that up. I used to put conditioner on my underarms when I shaved them, now I only use water because I think the conditioner was throwing off the balance of bacteria to make them smell. I'll be commenting updates from time to time until my hair and body have fully adjusted to this.
