“But around that time, the seed oil industry was in crisis because the use of those oils in paints and plastics was being displaced by new compounds made from petroleum. The industry needed new markets, and discovered ways to convince the public that seed oils were better than animal fats. They were called the “heart protective oils,” though human studies soon showed the same results that the animal studies had, namely, that they were toxic to the heart and increased the incidence of cancer.“ -Ray Peat

“Years ago, I noticed that Oregon was one of the few states that still had real whipping cream and cottage cheese without additives, so I have been trustingly using cream in my coffee every day. Last week, I noticed that my cream listed carrageenan in its ingredients. Over the years, I have avoided carrageenan-containing foods such as apple cider, hot dogs, most ice creams and prepared sauces and jellies, because they caused me to have serious allergic symptoms. Carrageenan has been found to cause colitis and anaphylaxis in humans, but it is often present in baby “formulas” and a wide range of milk products,” -Ray Peat

“In the 1940s, carrageenan, a polysaccharide made from a type of seaweed, was recognized as a dangerous allergen. Since then it has become a standard laboratory material to use to produce in-flammatory tumors (granulomas), immunodeficiency, arthritis, and other in-flammations. It has also become an increasingly common material in the food industry. Articles are often written to praise its usefulness and to claim that it doesn't produce cancer in healthy animals.” -Ray Peat

“Cancer, AIDS, and extreme hypothyroidism have several features in common--they cause tissue loss and organ damage, with immunodeficiency and intense activation of the stress hormones, including cortisol. In cancer and AIDS, a good case has been made for the primacy of stress-induced wasting as the main cause of death. Whatever one might believe to be the cause of cancer and AIDS, it is always good for the patient to prevent tissue damage from the stress associated with the sickness. Since the stress hormones primarily destroy tissues by the activation of specific proteases, the use of protease inhibitors for treating AIDS could conceivably be affecting the stress response. However, the body's normal protection against the cortisol-activated proteases is centered on the protective hormones, progesterone, thyroid, and the androgens. “ -Ray Peat

“Analysis showed a 37% reduction in overall cancer incidence with iron reduction and reduced cancer-specific and all-cause mortality among patients who developed cancer in the iron reduction arm compared with those in the control arm.”

“Findings from this study support the hypothesis that ambient levels of body iron stores represented by the serum ferritin level are associated with cancer risk and that lowering iron levels reduces cancer risk.”

“In this study, iron reduction appeared to begin reducing cancer risk relatively soon (within 6 months) after randomization. This timing presumably reflects an effect on incipient malignant disease and is consistent with the observation that increased risk of malignancy following blood transfusion is evident within 6 months ( 16 )”

“During aging, our tissues tend to store an excess of iron. There is a remarkably close association between the amount of iron stored in our tissues and the risk of death from cancer, heart disease, or from all causes. This relationship between iron and death rate exists even during childhood, but the curve is downward until the age of 12, and then it rises steadily until death. The shape of this curve, representing the iron burden, is amazingly similar to the curves representing the rate of death in general, and the rate of death from cancer. There is no other relationship in biology that I know of that has this peculiar shape, with its minimum at the age of 12, and its maximum in old age at the time of death.“ -Ray Peat

“Until a few years ago, these ideas were accepted by only a few researchers, but now practically every doctor in the country accepts that free radicals are important in the aging process. A nutrition researcher in San Diego suspected that the life-extending effects of calorie restriction might be the result of a decreased intake of toxins. He removed the toxic heavy metals from foods, and found that the animals which ate a normal amount of food lived as long as the semi-starved animals. Recently, the iron content of food has been identified as the major life-shortening factor, rather than the calories.“ -Ray Peat

“Although several researchers have demonstrated that iron destroys vitamins, there is enough wishful thinking in industry, government, and the consuming public, that such mistakes can go on for generations before anyone can mobilize the resources to bring the truth to the public. 10 years ago, I thought it was a hopeful sign of increased awareness of iron's danger when the manufacturer of a new iron product mentioned in the Physician's Desk Reference that it hadn't yet been reported to cause cancer.” -Ray Peat

“Bee pollen is loaded with a wide variety of antioxidants, among them flavonoids, carotenoids, quercetin, kaempferol and glutathione (5Trusted Source).

Antioxidants protect your body against potentially harmful molecules called free radicals. Damage by free radicals is linked to chronic diseases such as cancer and type 2 diabetes (6Trusted Source).

Test-tube, animal and some human studies have shown that bee pollen antioxidants can reduce chronic inflammation, eliminate harmful bacteria, fight infections and combat the growth and spread of tumors (7Trusted Source).

However, bee pollen’s antioxidant content also depends on its plant source (8).“

“The National Toxicology Program (NTP) concluded there is clear evidence that male rats exposed to high levels of radio frequency radiation (RFR) like that used in 2G and 3G cell phones developed cancerous heart tumors, according to final reports released today. There was also some evidence of tumors in the brain and adrenal gland of exposed male rats.”

“Saturated fats--coconut oil and butter, for example--do not promote tumor growth.[55] Olive oil is not a strong tumor promoter, but in some experiments it does have a slightly permissive effect on tumor growth.”

“Methyl sulfone is a small (94.33 mol wt), water-soluble compound that humans obtain from specific food sources such as cow's milk and a variety of vegetables [3]. Interestingly, vegetables that contain methyl sulfone have been identified as possible anti-cancer agents, but for compounds other than methyl sulfone; examples include broccoli, cabbage and Brussels sprouts. Over the last 50 years, the level of methyl sulfone has decreased in foods we eat [15]. This decrease is due, at least in part, to an increase in food processing including pasteurization [3]. It is premature to speculate on any causal connections between reduction of methyl sulfone in our environment and the increased incidence of cancer, but the possibility is interesting. We know that industrialization has introduced cancer-causing compounds into our environment. But the opposite, putting an anti-cancer compound back into our environment, would be progressive.“

“Recently, MSM is also believed to possess anticancer effect in prostate cancer, breast (Caron et al. 2013), or bladder (Joung et al. 2014). Its apoptotic-inducing and anti-inflammatory characteristics might have a beneficial effect in many types of cancers. MSM is reported to decrease the invasiveness of cells via modulation of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in breast cancer cells (Lim et al. 2012) as well be tested in combinational therapy with Janus kinase 2 (Jak2) inhibitor in bladder cancer (Joung et al. 2014). A combinational therapy of MSM (200 mM) and tamoxifen was reported to inhibit breast cancer tumor growth and metastasis, both in vitro and in vivo by modulation of Jak2 and transducer and activator of transcription 5b (STAT5b) pathway.”

“Gingival squamous cell carcinoma is a rare form of cancer that accounts for less than 10% of all head and neck cancers. Targeted therapies with natural compounds are of interest because they possess high efficacy with fewer side-effects. Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) is an organic sulfur-containing compound with anticancer activities.”

“MSM inhibits cell viability in a concentration-dependent manner and induces G1 arrest in gingival cancer cells. To determine whether MSM inhibits proliferation of a gingival squamous adenocarcinoma cell line, the number of treated cells during the logarithmic phase was compared with the number of non-treated control cells. Cell growth was inhibited by approximately 43% after 24 h of treatment with 200 mM MSM (Figure 1A).”

‘"...The role of estrogen in driving tumor growth in breast cancers is well established, but the role of progesterone is the topic of much controversy. According to Tilley, this is because of past studies showing some negative effects of synthetic versions of progesterone used in hormonal therapy for postmenopausal women. “We have known for some time that the progesterone receptor plays an important role in breast cancer, but gaps in our knowledge of the function of this receptor in breast tumors have limited the potential to develop new treatments,” explained Tilley. “In our studies, we are using natural progesterone, or forms of this hormone that are biologically identical to the natural hormone, and testing it on breast cancer tissue taken from women with cancer.” The present study employed a special breast cancer modeling technique that was developed by the UA group, which allowed them to test potential new treatments directly on breast cancer tissue donated by patients. It confirmed that progesterone receptors reprogram the actions of estrogen receptor, with an overall ‘braking effect’ on tumor growth. The researchers also identified a new progesterone receptor-targeting drug that not only opposed the action of estrogen in breast cancers to halt tumor growth, but actually caused the tumors to regress. This new drug is now poised to enter clinical trials."’

“It actually interacts with the oestrogen receptor to alter the way it works in a tumour cell," one of the team Wayne Tilley from the University of Adelaide in South Australia told Anna Salleh at ABC News. "If the progesterone receptor is not there, then the oestrogen receptor switches on all these genes that are associated with stimulating tumour growth and stimulating metastasis." This means if people have low levels of progesterone receptors, the oestrogen receptors are free to switch on aggressive genes that drive cancer growth and make hormone therapy less effective. "When the progesterone receptor is there, the oestrogen receptor sits in different parts of the DNA. You don't switch on those nasty genes but switch on those associated with a better outcome," says Tilley. When mice with breast cancer were given a treatment of tamoxifen combined with progesterone, the growth of their tumours slowed significantly more than in mice that were just giving the tamoxifen alone. "Tests showed that mice given progesterone and tamoxifen had breast tumours only half the size of those given the drug on its own," Ian Sample reports for The Guardian."”
