Do not believe the mainstream etymology it is a web of lies for the most part. They say kaff is from Sanskrit lol that's how you know it's b.s. Sanskrit was invented by British and German scholars in the 1700/1800s

Kaf in Dutch = chaff
Kaff in German = dump

This may apply more to coffee ( Kaffe ) than all forms of caffeine.
