How bad are organic freeze dried strawberries? (my 2 year old wont eat any other fruit)

so my 2 year old is doing pretty well, hes full of life and communicative and i have no serious health concerns but he has zero interest in fruit- EXCEPT for apples and organic freeze dried strawberries. interestingly, although he loves the organic freeze dried strawberries hes completely uninterested in fresh strawberries.

im slightly concerned hes not getting enough Vitamin C and maybe potassium.

he wont touch vegetables full stop (not a bad thing imo) but its a shame hes uninterested in almost all fruits.

he eats mainly:

- lots of full fat organic milk (thank god!) + muesli oats
- organic pasta /beef bolognese sauce
- lots of bread (in germany its usually ok quality) with butter or soft cheese
- lots of cheese

i make sure his pufa intake is very low as well- no seed oils here.

he loves chocolate, ice cream, biscuits of course haha. i have been a bit more lenient than most parents would because i dont think carbs are the devil. but maybe not teaching him best eating habits.

hes also not interested in eggs which is a shame.

any thoughts on the freeze dried strawberries would be helpful. If he gets some vitamin c and if theyre definitely organic, maybe its worth it?

Sounds like a healthy start to me ddjd! You might try making him an Orange Julius, or other fruity shakes, with fresh squeezed oranges or other fruit, whole milk, sugar, a pinch of salt, vanilla and ice cubes. Young children love cold things, with their sore mouths from teething. I like to use frozen fruit as ice cubes in my water, which gives me a lot of extra nutrition without trying. Get yourself some popsicle molds too, and freeze puréed fruits. With kids you gotta make it fun to get it down.

Attached is the link to my homemade ice cream thread. It takes me less than five minutes to blend the 3 ingredients together and get it churning. You can sneak in all the fruit you want!

@ddjd my kid is almost 2yr and we use organic freeze-dried berries in the winter when you can't get any organic berries, so would definitely have no issue with organic and freeze dried fruit. As an idea, I would try combining foods you want him to eat with foods he already likes. E.g. adding fruit to the milk or oats (if you haven't tried this already). I've not had to do it as my kid likes fruit, but I would even sneak in fruit in savoury meals like past dishes/bolognese.

I've noticed in some of my clients with kids that are picky eaters that often that have lower levels of commensal bacteria such lacto/bifido/other. I know probiotics are not exactly beloved here, but we've seen good improvements in appetite and general willingness to try more foods when we use a probiotic and some herbal anti-bacterials. Not saying that is the reason why he doesn't like fruit in your case, but I do believe the microbiome can affect our appetite/craving/etc for different foods. So worth keeping in mind.

@ddjd, dairy and meat are excellent sources of vitamin C (dehydroascorbic acid) and the foods you listed, especially milk and tomato/bolognese, supply plenty of potassium. I think freeze-dried fruit is a great alternative to the processed crisps/chips for that crunchy texture. If your son hasn’t tried them, he might like freeze-dried mangoes. I’m not sure if this type of cereal is available in Germany, but freeze-dried mangoes remind me of the freeze-dried marshmallows in boxed cereals we have here like Lucky Charms.

interesting, i thought they were fairly low in their content of even that form of vitamin c but maybe youre right. ill have to research that more, thanks for letting me know.

@chrstn4o appreciate that. i will stay with the freeze dried strawberries then and try out more of the mixing fruits in idea!

you can boil egg or mix raw one with some juice and your kid won't even notice. My 2.5yo also doesn't like eggs, maybe sometimes but he changes his preferences weekly so it's hard to tell what will be tomorrow :)
