I think Duesberg's argument that HIV could not epidemiologically choose gay men, iv drug users, or African blacks is provocative b/c it suggests cultural and ideological causes of disease interpretation. The way he demonstrates how death from AIDS & ARC are calculated to find these groups representative of the thing we refer to when we say "AIDS" is an important challenge to the conventional view, the way I see it. Not all people who succumb to fungal pneumonia or Kaposi's are calculated as AIDS victims.
There are other threads about Duesberg's dissent and the politics of his views. I do not know whether or not he is correct. But improving metabolism can only help people get and stay well as they can be. Abusing the metabolism clearly makes the body vulnerable to opportunistic disease processes. On this I cannot disagree with him.
