Are there any studies proving that magnesium is absorbed through the skin?

In my experience it seems to be very little. The only time I notice good magnesium absorption and retention is when my thyroid is working correctly and I likely have plenty of progesterone circulating. I've had very obvious signs of excellent absorption from Magnesium Bicarbonate or Glycinate, so the topical Magnesium crowd that claims that internal absorption is poor have no idea what they are talking about. If your absorption/retention is poor it is probably a sign of low progesterone/thyroid.

I feel I had some results with mag oil rubbed into my feet right before bed to help with restless legs and falling to sleep. It seemed to be very short-lived, however. Mag bicarb water seems to work much, much better though--as mentioned above.
