    Aspirin Chelates Iron

Both vitamin E and aspirin have been associated in epidemiological studies with lower iron saturation, however I don't think either one is considered an iron chelator. This study says that aspirin is in fact an iron chelator. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/3335633 "...Since MDA production...

Lowering Iron (chelation) May Stop Alzheimer Disease (AD)

Ray has written several times about the dangers of excess iron and its relation to neurodegenerative conditions. He also routinely recommends measuring ferritin and transferrin as more accurate way of assessing iron status. It seems that some people in Australia exhibit proper cognitive...

Is Ray Peats Iron Overload Worries A Lil Extreme?

I been listening to a lecture on iron overload from Chris Kresser which you can find here: http://chriskresser.com/iron-behaving-badly-the-role-of-iron-overload-in-metabolic-disease Although I believe he is no where near as smart as Ray Peat, he does have a good take on things and is somewhat...

Improving Iron Status Without Supplementing Iron

Ray has written about the benefits of low iron stores, and how there are very few cases of true iron deficiency anemia. He also mentioned that even for iron deficient people there is almost never a need to take iron supplements as other methods can achieve the same results. This human study...

The Iron Elimination Paradox & Weight Loss

I've been reading about Hepcidin, a pro hormone discovered recently in 2000. It is the hormone that regulates Iron absorption and elimination in the body. There is a lot of evidence via Ray Peat that most degenerative conditions involve excess iron, either directly or indirectly. Hepcidin is...

Iron Deficiency May Protect Against Malaria, TB And Cancer

I was just doing a little Googlefu about iron stores since my iron binding capacity is really high, trying to decide if I should supplement or not. I keep thinking I probably should not, especially if I happen to actually be sick. Then I ran across this: Iron deficiency, even mild anemia, may...

Cranberry Juice Is An Iron Chelator

For those people trying to lower their iron levels and not being able to take aspirin or vitamin E, this may be a safer alternative. I am not sure cranberries are very Peaty, but they are probably safer in terms of causing GI bleeding than both aspirin and vitamin E...

Tetracycline Antibiotics Are Strong Iron Chelators

Excess iron is implicated in virtually all chronic pathologies as well as a number of acute infections. Ray has written about this and mentioned that phlebotomy is one good way to reduce iron overload. He also mentioned that coffee is another good method. However, one of these methods is...

Is There Any Way To Lower Iron Without Donating Blood?

I wonder, lets say you have too much iron, How can you get rid of it. Is there any other way other than getting rid of some blood. How can you even get rid of any blood other than donating it and they take a huge ammount, too much.

Why does chocolate iron content vary so much?

Should I be skeptical of my chocolate label when it says 2 percent DV per ounce? This is "Fearless" dark chocolate. I have been eating it because of this but wondering why every other chocolate I come across has such high levels of iron in its nutritional information. Does anyone know the...

    Fruit With Protein

Peat says to pair proteins with fruit/sugar always. However most fruits have vitamin c and if paired with meats, increase iron absorption. Then we have to have the coffee/tea to reduce the absorption. Would it be just as effective to just not have fruit when eating red meats? thnx

Iron Not Only Bad In Excess, But Also Bad In Deficiency?

I'd like to start a discussion on: The question if iron deficiency is as bad as iron excess. The connection between thyroid dysfunction and iron deficiency. Determining the optimal intake of iron (i.e. how much mg iron/day, optimal ferritin/transferrin saturation values? Intake by symptoms?)...

    Iron Removal

I know there are some discussions about PUFA removal from our tissue/body, but is there any information about the removal of excess iron that has been accumulated over the years? What is the process of Iron removal in our body? What is the time frame (Is it similar to PUFA's)? Es

    How much iron per day?

I have been looking at alternatives to orange juice for my sugar source to reduce the amount of liquid I am taking in. Raisins and currants are quite cheap and provide a lot of sugar and calories however they contain a fair bit of iron, up to 3+mg per 100 grams. I would plan on eating a few...

Another method to reduce iron absorbtion in meat?

It has occurred to me that eating red meat with some cheese (or any other source of calcium) and also taking a vitamin D supplement should inhibit iron absorption. Vitamin D enhances Calcium absorption, which directly competes with Iron. Any thoughts on this?

    Iron

--Dr. Ray Peat from "Iron's Dangers" http://raypeat.com/articles/articles/iron-dangers.shtml I think iron is an overlooked, major "bad guy" in PeatWorld. Personally, I have extremely high Ferritin levels, which could reflect high iron stores in my tissues, although it could also reflect high...
