A novel aspect of this study was to conduct the thyroid ablation after cold acclimation had been achieved, resulting in a hypothyroid state associated with normal body temperature and survival. This approach allowed us to assess the effects of cold-induced NST in tissues free of thyroid-induced thermogenesis. In contrast, room temperature-adapted hypothyroid rats are unsuitable for these studies, because the animals rapidly develop hypothermia and die within hours of cold exposure.

"If a person is in very good health, cold stimulation can increase thyroid and other anabolic hormones, but it can be too stressful if a person's energy level is already low." RP
