This article discusses a very interesting study on isradipine, a calcium channel blocker. Apparently, it was discovered that youthful dopaminergic neurons depend on sodium ions for their firing, while older dopaminergic neurons rely more on calcium ions. As we all know from Peat's work, intracellular accumulation of calcium is stressful, as the researcher comments on in the article. Administration of isradipine blocked calcium accumulation in the neurons and, after a few hours, caused them to begin relying on sodium ions like youthful neurons.

NMDA antagonists like memantine are also calcium channel blockers, and are used as a treatment for alzheimer, since it restores dopamine levels.

Cat's Claw is a MAO-B inhibitor, NMDA antagonist, calcium channel blocker, CYP450/CYP2D6 inhibitor and a 5HT2A agonist. It was used in studies for Alzheimer too I think.

I had a bad experience with it with a very high dose, 4 grams, together with 4 grams of Astragalus which is also a MAO-B inhibitor. But perhaps at cautious low doses it could do good. Just be warned, MAO inhibitors can be dangerous.

Cat's Claw can also be psychoactive/psychedelic so be warned!

"Astragalus which is also a MAO-B inhibitor." - Where did you read this?
Crataegus, ginseng, polygonum, salvia, astragalus, and epimedium reduced MAO activity by 50%.

THE INTERACTIONS OF HERBS AND DRUGS

Another concern for patients taking MAOIs is the potential for herbs to further reduce MAO activity. MAO activity is known to increase with aging resulting in lower levels of neurotransmitters which ultimately leads to decreased mental capacity. “Anti-aging formulas” used in Chinese medicine that contain such herbs as raw rehmannia (sheng di huang), astragalus seed (sha yuan zi) dipsacus (xu duan), achyranthes (niu xi), and ho-shou-wu (he shou wu) have been shown to reduce MAO activity in mice.

Wow, thanks for the share. It's a shame it doesn't point to the primary source. But still useful to know. Thanks!

Perhaps it’s psychedelic property comes from 5ht2a agonism.

It sounds like a MAO-B inhibitor is a good thing? @lozko ?
I was thinking of using it
