So why would nicotinic acid (or niacin) be good if it increases HDL Cholesterol ?
The most widely used drug to increase HDL levels is nicotinic acid or niacin. Niacin is thought to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease by lowering LDL cholesterol concentrations and raising those of HDL cholesterol. “On the basis of the weight of available evidence showing net clinical harm, niacin must be considered to have an unacceptable toxicity profile for the majority of patients, and it should not be used routinely”
According to Haidut/Peat:
Having high HDL is actually not a good thing. Also, anything that increases your HDL will tend do decrease LDL, and low LDL is one of the most powerful predictors of cancer incidence even decades before it happens.
Well, I have had this discussion several times with actual doctors and most of them either dismiss this idea directly or just ask me "why do you want to get us unemployed. we make money by selling stuff that lowers LDL and increases HDL".
