I saw the turn on that but the timing and change in tone wreaked of mining for popular vote.

I don't think any of these people are write-offs. It's just that they can't be trusted and party colour or political leaning are irrelevant. They'll respond to public pressure, if only it can come together around specifics and be applied. The people of nations have to govern by demand for a bit.
