Losing weight shortens life, staying fat is better

it's difficult to say. But I would say most people I meet are "trying to lose weight" so it stands to reason that many/most "wanted to lose weight."
people often drop some weight when they improve their diet. It is probably too stressful to "try" to lose weight.
