My appetite is BACK after 4 years! A cocktail of Augmentin + Lactoferrin + Famotidine + S.boulardii cured my mystery gut issues (H. pylori?)

Don’t want to hijack this thread but I started my first water kefir today to (hopefully) build up my microbiome again.

I used to love making water kefir and wish I could have the same grains again because they were so strong. I made it with organic white sugar and a bit of molasses (and distilled water I believe). Just a few sips here and there really helped my daughter’s digestion.

@youngsinatra Yup, same here...
I also suspect my lingering (digestive) issues are based in my colon and that that's also the cause of why I always have to strain when having a bowel movement. (and sadly the need for some (insoluble)fiber)
The lower belly, below the bellybutton, is also where I feel uncomfortable and when I get uncomfortable feelings, it only happens 4+ hours after eating or when I'm in bed.
Same issue, below bellybutton. Do you find plant food irritates this?

My gut is definitely readjusting while drinking water kefir. Passed some weird stool, felt slight discomfort in the first days but it's fine now. I have heard to go slow with kefir. (Well, I'm not good at doing so :D ) so I am already drinking 500-700ml a day, split into small portions after each meal. The water kefir grains are growing like crazy. Just one week in and I already have like 150g excess of kefir grains (I think I will dry them for storage) and I only started with a 25g starter culture.

It's the plant toxins and carbs (oxalates, fructose/fodmaps,starch) which cause issues for me....lol,which basically comes down to plant foods in general.

Interesting to think that we (ideally!) have trillions of different gut bacteria in our gut, that produce beneficial short-chain-fatty acids, produce B vitamins like thiamine, folate, biotin, riboflavin, and panthothenic acid, have an influence on redox status and absorption of different minerals/metals, influence most of our neurotransmitters (not just serotonin, but dopamine and acetylcholine aswell) and much more.

The first living thing on this planet was a simple bacteria and we still carry them with us in our digestive tract. A leading theory states that mitochondria originated from bacteria.

People who have grown up on farms, drinking raw milk and being surrounded by animals, have much higher microbiome diversity, lower incidences of allergies, eczema and digestive problems. I think the overly-cleanliness of us humans has caused problem. Plus the tons of antibiotics we have been given and we have taken.

Vaginal birth is so beneficial because babies take in a lot of bacteria from that vaginal canal by mouth that afterwards form our gut microbiome. There is very clear evidence that vaginal birth is highly beneficial in comparison to C. section birth in terms of supporting overall health, lowering risk for autoimmunity etc.. Same with breast milk in comparison to formula.

I think Ray's idea of the sterile gut is missing something.

Hey @Korven, it's awesome to hear about your improvement. How are you doing now? Are you still feeling better after your cocktail?

You have a very good batch and you’re feeding it right. I’ve heard a lot of stories of people’s not multiplying, especially so early on. I used to feel guilty for throwing mine away and felt I had to make kefir for others, etc. Today I’d just get rid of them if overwhelmed, knowing they’d regenerate. Maybe good for compost? Plant food?

Hey @Korven, it's awesome to hear about your improvement. How are you doing now? Are you still feeling better after your cocktail?

Thanks for asking!

Yes, I am feeling a LOT better.

Still have a ravenous appetite (compared to my feeble baseline before).

And the sclera of my eyes are white again! Before they were always bloodshot, probably from chronic endotoxin poisoning or something.

However, I find I still have to avoid inflammatory foods to feel and function well.

The main ones for me being:

1. nightshades (gives me terrible inflammation, skin issues, mouth ulcers, terrible mood, achy back... AND MORE!!)
2. gluten (can eat it occasionally, but makes me very sick if I continue indulging over weeks/months).

So, as long as I avoid those two I am good. But it seems like I needed the "cocktail" to clean out my gut and get back my appetite, because just avoiding these offensive foods before wasn't enough to get my digestion/appetite working properly again.

People on various forums have had success eliminating Candida by taking Artemesinin Annua, Sweet Wormwood.
I have been taking one big sip of wormwood tea before meals and it seems to really stimulate hunger finally. I don't know what this means for me but probably not good. Don't notice much else with wormwood. Maybe little less inflamed, I can suffer slightly less at work.
Have the same issue as Korven had, never hungry but alot of other stuff going as well.
This inspired me to try some lactoferrin. Thanks.

So you think it’s some sort of endotoxin reaction? I unfortunately get this reaction from dairy. Red and tired feeling eyes. I keep trying to brute force foods that I don’t tolerate because I hear so many good things about them but I think I finally need to let go lol.

UPDATE:

I would not recommend doing this protocol - it was a short lived success and did not really work long-term. After circa 2 months my appetite vanished again after stress + eating "bad" foods (for me gluten). I was back to where I was before taking augmentin, maybe even worse off because I now had quite bad heartburn. I think H pylori will just re-infect the gut and there is no way of nuking it with antibiotics.

HOWEVER... I find I can get the same benefits by avoiding certain foods (wheat and oatmeal and nightshades) and eating the L Reuteri yoghurt mentioned earlier in the thread. Writing this now I can feel my stomach growling for dinner which is a wonderful feeling. L Reuteri colonizes the gut and kills H pylori so its an awesome bacteria to have in your tummy.

Besides the appetite boost I am feeling better than I have in a long time. I am back to working out again, I have endless energy, sleep well, run a business while studying full-time, my eyesight is improving, and I have this sense of deep wellbeing that I haven't had in years. This level of health actually feels surreal for me and I am just waiting for "the comedown" lol.

@Korven thanks for the update and transparency about what's working and what's not! Glad to hear you're feeling better. How does coffee treat you these days?

Additionally, do you think stomach rumbling is a good sign that the intestine is working? I've seen a few people report on reddit that stomach grumblings indicate peristalsis, wondering if you've (or anyone else has) found this to be true

Thanks!

It seems like I tolerate coffee better now, I can drink 3-4 cups and not have it disturb my sleep, and I get pleasantly tired/relaxed and want to socialise after drinking coffee (which maybe is a sign of tolerating it better?).

But to be honest, I am not sure if coffee is a net benefit for my health. I drink it mostly out of habit and because I like the taste and the ritual. I think I am feeling so good in spite of coffee, and not because of it **reserve the right to be wrong though, Peat may be correct on caffeine. What I can say with 100% certainty however is that other factors are MUCH MUCH more important for my health than avoiding coffee, namely avoiding allergenic foods/foods that make me miserable. IM LOOKING AT YOU OATMEAL!!!!

I never heard about stomach rumbling indicating peristalsis, that does make sense, I mean why else would the stomach be rumbling??? It could be the migrating motor complex sweeping out intestinal junk and bacteria between meals. If so, then rumbling would be a sign of good intestinal function. I remember hearing or reading somewhere that gut infections can cause the interstitial cells of cajal in the gut (important for peristalsis) to malfunction, which then leads to SIBO.

hey Korven, I was curious how your Reuteri yogurt was doing for you. Are you still getting the same benefits from it as you did in the beginning?

Hi peatmoss, sorry for the late reply!

Constantly having to make L. reuteri yoghurt became a bit of a chore, so I stopped doing that after a while.

My digestion is quite good these days, but during periods of high stress and/or eating bad foods, I do notice some gastritis symptoms e.g. loss of appetite, some heartburn, waking up feeling crappy. I will take Pylopass (inactivated L. reuteri) and deglycyrrhizinated licorice and that usually fixes things in a few days. I also have lots of biogaia gastrus tablets left that I take occasionally.

Haven't had any chest pain whatsoever since June so that is a big success.

However I haven't been able to replicate how good I felt in my last update in October. I am not exactly sure what I was doing right at the time, maybe I was being more strict with my diet? It was really a profound feeling of well-being. I have eaten pizza a couple of times lately, and potatoes, both of which don't agree with me.
