Pleural Effusion,smoker,Cough,Help Needed

Hello my husband has been coughing for about 2 months,had become quite breathless last week and after X Ray was diagnosed with large pleural effusion in left lung. one and a half litres of fluid was drained on Thursday which relieved coughing and lessened breathlessness .I am extremely worried as he is a lifelong smoker and has never cared much about health plus this diagnose polnts to a lot of diseases (worst case scenario ) lung cancer. He had a C T scan yesterday which terrifies me as obviously it's going to highlight everything (even things that should be left alone). He gets all results back on the 30th June ,please respond thank you.

get an electronic thermometer, check where his temperature is at, maybe he has a bad thyroid, that is a good place to start. smoking is a good thing to stop.
