A family member of mine has been prescribed metronidazole for pericoronitis due to a molar tooth not having space and the gum because inflamed. I was worried about him taking metronidazole after researching its effects, he’s now been prescribed amoxicillin. I read it’s a safer option and can be used for dental infections too. The dentist he seen last said the infection seems to be worse and spreading and said the amoxicillin may not work and still need to take metronidazole. He advised to take metronidazole but still prescribed amoxicillin also and said it’s his choice/risk. The dentist was pretty pushy and rude, due to his history of fibromyalgia I was worried about the metronidazole causing issues due to it being a thiamine antagonist and it’s damage to the brain and CNS. But now I’m also worried did I give my opinion when I shouldn’t have and caused bad judgement on his part, meaning what if the amoxicillin doesn’t work and the infection gets very severe/dangerous from not taking metronidazole. Or maybe are the dentists being irrational and ignorant for choosing metronidazole? Just looking for help from someone who might know more.
He is in a lot of pain due to this and struggling to eat or talk fully but I’m not dentist I’m not sure of the severity or dangers.
