Are candles an ok substitute for light at evening? Sometimes it is very soothing turning off the infrared light, letting the darkness, low lights and colors enter.

If for nothing else it is better than being in total darkness at least.

I'd personally rather have red light at night too (for sleeping) -- just less.

Yeah thats true.
I often fall asleep under red light and it's very nice.

We are at our darkest in the north now so my lamps are on all the time. Problem is my apartment lights up and is very vissible for everyone down town, so I must barricade my windows. I felt some relief lighting up alot of candles, opening the windows and enjoing the view. It also creates great warmth.

But I guess it would be smart to go for stearic candles without scent and colors in them.

Would a room filled with lighted candles create more Co2?

They may give off a little CO2 but I believe they moreso give off CO. They are fun though. I say if you enjoy it then do it. You could just put a bright light on after and let it shine on your face for a few minutes to quell the stress.
