    Your thread title and your post each ask a different question.

    I'm not familiar with the notion that protein is required to process sugar but I am familiar with the notion that sugar is required to adequately process protein.

    Protein converts into sugar when glycogen levels are low (gluconeogensis) and when it's not we call it 'spared' (by sugar).
