Perhaps because they come from the world’s biggest toxic dump site - the ocean...

Here you go:

This sculptor got heavy metal poisoning from working with mussel shells

https://www.cbc.ca/radio/asithappen...ing-from-working-with-mussel-shells-1.4930128

More:
Transplanted or caged mussels have previously been used in Argentina, the Mediterranean Sea, Boston Harbour, and the South Pacific to identify areas of metal pollution.

Overall, the assessment that the investigated toxic elements may pose a health risk to heavy mussel consumers, especially related to the levels of Pb and Cd in M. galloprovincialis from hot spots in the all investigated Seas. Although consumption of these mussels provides proteins, essential minerals and vitamins, and thus, some protection from certain diseases, the risks and benefits of their consumption are still hard to assess because of the metals bioacumulated from the marine environment, with their reviewed toxicity. The final conclusion of this review is that M. galloprovincialis is an excellent candidate for aquaculture but that extreme care must be taken when choosing the location of farms. Care should also be taken by coastal populations when consuming wild mussels from contamination hot spots.

I don't think oyster shells are suitable for calcium supplementation, due to heavy metals in them.

The labdoor analysis of this product says it passed their purity tests "(heavy metal content below 2 PPM)". NOW Foods Calcium Carbonate Review

This is the answer I received from NOW: "Our calcium carbonate may imported from Japan, India or China. The raw matrial is tested here in our Labs in the USA for heavy metals and microbial safety."

I often wondered about oysters, clams, mussels, etc. Many members here, including Ray eat this type of seafood. None of them really know the amount of heavy metals that are in them, mostly because they aren't tested and don't come with a COA. lol. Yet Ray and some of these members are anal about the amount of lead, etc. in their vitamin C and other supplements, where like I've asserted before is minor compared to what is in our food, we just don't know it, just like this woman didn't. If the oceans are polluted, then these filter-type fish will be as well, caveat emptor.

I’d like to humbly suggest that a forum member start an eggshell powder supplement company—they would do very well entrepreneurially, even if their overwhelming consumer demographic was just forum members! It seems to me that most of us struggle to meet Dr. Peat’s daily calcium consumption for a variety of reasons, yet we know best how important the calcium to phosphate ratio is to human health. I would do it if I could, but I’m sure there is someone here who is able! Once again, there is high demand, as there’s really no other way for most of us to meet our calcium needs, and I don’t see this changing in the foreseeable future. There’s a business here for years to come!

so is the NOW calcium powder safe?

I was thinking about using it but I'm worried about the heavy metal content.
