Lifestyle.

And I mean that in an incredibly broad sense, i.e. work, play, relationships, diet, exercise, hobbies, interests, etc.

Trying to reduce it down to any one, two or three major factors can only really be done on a case by case basis.

More than 10 years ago I noticed the correlation that if I ate fried food at a restaurant, within days I would be almost guaranteed to get a cold, even if there wasn't any particular cold going around at my office. I figured that something in the fried food temporarily lowered my immunity (heat damaged PUFAs I guess). If I go to a restaurant now I try to stick with less oily options like pizza or I'll bulk out a meal (e.g. Indian food) with lots of steamed white rice.

I've also noticed that since gallbladder surgery 2 years ago I seem more likely to get colds, I think my vitamin D absorbtion is just not as good anymore.
