I believe it's not a typical virus and not a typical year in terms of respiratory deaths. Whether it's bad enough to warrant the actions that have been taken by various governments isn't for me to say, it's a matter of weighing the value of the economy and the value of elderly lives, and each person will value them differently based on their own circumstances.
There are roughly 50,000,000 people in the US who no longer have jobs or businesses due to the arbitrary and illegal concept of "non-essential" businesses, that can be closed or restricted by executive order (not even law). One can take care of the elderly by not sending infectious people to nursing homes, and providing support to keep them at home as needed. It is not a question of Economy vs Value of elderly lives.
