Which Ion is safest for mineral supplementation?

If we do choose to supplement:

What can we consider the safest form of Ion in supplements?

Glycinate/Chelate ?
Oxide ? (Unlikely!)
Citrate ? (Heard Peat say bad things about this in an interview)
Stearate ?

Would it differ depending on the mineral? Magnesium, Zinc etc For Calcium its clear its Carbonate. Would a carbonate Ion be safe for consumption combined with other minerals? Or do certain combinations become toxic?

My biochemistry is not good enough for me to work this out.

I have not heard Mr Peat mention which one he would consider least damaging/allergenic simply because he generally doesn't recommend mineral supplementation at all.

Hi Kettebell,

For zinc , without any hesitation, the liquid zinc sulphate at dose of 10mg for one week or two.And it's usually enough to correct any deficiency.
For magnesium, either the taurate or glycinate form but this is just supposition from what I get from Ray and lita lee's articles.
Did you try the eidon liquid minerals?
They are made only with the mineral salt and purified water. It may worth a try.

Thanks Wilfred,

I wasn't talking specifically for me. I was enquiring in general.

I have seen different ions banded about as "The best type" on various forums in relation to different mineral supplements with no definitive answers based on good science.

I completely agree topical application is best.

So to expand the question:

Which mineral ions are best for ingestion if that is the way someone wants to go and which minerals are best taken topically and which ion form is best for this.

Good question. Here's a very tiny step towards an answer...

I'm not sure where she got this information, but in the RPF supplement list (viewtopic.php?f=3&t=226), Mandarina makes some comments about Peat's views on magnesium supplements.

Ray Peat suggests Magnesium Oxide or Magnesium Carbonate. However, good results are reported from the Magnesium Oil below.

I have used the magnesium oxide powder in the supplement list without any problems. The magnesium oil (magnesium chloride), however, made me itch like crazy.

I am pretty sure that was pulled from Ray Peat fans page. Not 100% on that though. I will see if I can source it later when I have more time.

Fluoride seems to be the safest due to the higly reactive fluorine molecule. :P

That would be pretty cool!

In Female Hormones in Context (p. 1), Ray Peat calls orotate, glutamate, and aspartate toxins. Hope y'all don't see those names on your supplement shelves.

Tricky subject this!

It seems that the Ion of choice changes depending on the mineral it is bound to.
