What herbs, spices or foods do y'all find the most useful?

I have room on my balcony & in my home to grow. No room for trees though.

I live in italy and i cultivate on my balcony the typical mediterranean herbs:thyme, basil, sage, rosemary, oregan, majoram and lavander.
I use it cooking,on chicken breast, beef, liver and potatoes.
I think they are safe cause they've been used for ages by mediterranean people and i use it in small amounts.

rosemary for frying, basil for tomato sauce, cilantro for fiber salad, thyme for congestion/throat issues and sage b/c I like how it looks.
for in home I would go with air purifying plants. there's lists all over the internet for plant that remove specific types of pollutants.

And if you like them/climate is right, I'd consider: tomatoes, capsicum, blue berries, black currants, parsley, spinach, chard?
Depending on how big your balcony is, you could probably grow spuds in a big bucket or sack.
