What happens to serum hormone levels while on IUD?

I'm troubled because my daughter is in a hurry to try-out an IUD (Kyleena, levonorgestrel-based) before college, but I'm busy trying to figure-out the cause/solution to her dark moods that come on suddenly. My guess is they're caused by spikes in Estrogen (but I don't know), so I've been supplementing her heavily with the Progest-E and trying to get her thyroid optimal. But now she's asking for an IUD which just feels like monkey wrench being thrown-in! I'd love to know what happens to the serum levels of the hormones while on an IUD. I know it gives off tiny amounts of hormone, but does it effect you systemically anyway? Does anyone know what happens to the serum hormone levels or have experience on this type of IUD? Thanks!

I had wished her to have a copper one because at least it wasn't hormonal, but the Gyno said she pulls those out the most.
