European media have reported that secret information about the exact location of the US nuclear arsenal in Europe has been leaked, allegedly by pure chance. But there was no excitement in connection with the publication of this information: after all, we are talking about "some" 150 American nuclear bombs stored near five key capitals of Europe.

The roots of this story trace back to a report prepared by Canadian Senator Joseph Day for the NATO Parliamentary Assembly. In it, the politician writes on the subject of "a new era of nuclear deterrence" and, as if casually, mentions five countries where American B61 bombs with a nuclear warhead are deployed. According to the senator, these are the Klein-Brogel (Belgium), Büchel (Germany), Aviano and Gedi-Torre (Italy), Volkel (Netherlands) and Incirlik (Turkey) bases. The preliminary version of the report was posted on the website of the assembly in the public domain back in April, and then the content of the document did not attract media attention. Interest in the topic woke up only after the text of the report, at the request of an unknown person, was changed in July, and the mention of specific bases where the bombs were stored disappeared from it.

The presence of American bombs with nuclear warheads on the territory of NATO countries has long been an open secret, especially for specialists dealing with nonproliferation issues. Even the public of the countries mentioned in the report, and the European Union as a whole, has become somewhat accustomed to this fact in recent years, and by and large there has not been a broad discussion about the storage of US nuclear charges before. However, this time representatives of the Belgian "green" party Groen, one of the first to pay attention to the unedited version of the Canadian senator's report, have already announced that they intend to seek an open debate on the need to withdraw nuclear weapons from the country. And acting Prime Minister Charles Michel was reminded that it was his decision that an order was issued for the purchase of dual-purpose aircraft for the Belgian Air Force, capable of according to experts, to carry an upgraded version of the B61 bombs.
