CDC planning new travel-related measures to fight Ebola

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Tuesday it will soon announce new travel-related recommendations aimed at stopping the spread of Ebola in the United States, and indicated the new measures would be announced later this week.

CDC Director Tom Frieden didn’t say whether the new recommendations would include a ban on flights from the three West African countries that have suffered an Ebola outbreak. But he did say the steps are related to travel, and said he knows many Americans are worried about how international travel could contribute to an outbreak in the United States.

I'm seriously afraid. Hope this doesn't become the 'red' plague like the black death in the middle ages. They didn't have global travel on the scale we have today. I just have no confidence in the way this is being handled.

Wow.

Two Dallas ISD custodial managers placed on leave over slow cleaning at schools affected by Ebola case

Two Dallas ISD custodial supervisors said they were placed on administrative leave Monday because it took too long to clean five schools affected by the city’s Ebola case and because they supplied hazmat suits to the custodians who cleaned the schools.

It is little short of amazing that no one who was in the apartment with him has (reportedly) shown symptoms yet.

It has been speculated that one reason Ebola has hit so hard in west africa is because of selenium deficiency in the soil. Duncan, having lived in west africa all his life, would have the relevant physiological susceptibility, compared to relatives/friends who have spent many, many years now in the US. This is one of the things I am interested to see played out in the Duncan case.

According to this study, 50% of men and 53% of women in Spain are selenium deficient.

They are going to euthanize the Spanish nurse's dog :( .
The husband is in quarantine as well as the nurse. They are "sterilizing" their apt.

That's an interesting point. I was hoping that maybe better nutritional status could help with resistance. There are so many unknown variables.

Sen. Bill Frist (a DOCTOR) in an opinion piece on FoxNews

Ebola is contagious, but far less so than small pox or HIV.

Ridiculous. How insulting to people's intelligence. That's pretty much what the infectious disease/control specialist at my work said last week tho.

Frisco Patient Exhibiting Ebola Symptoms

FRISCO (CSBDFW.COM) - An afternoon news conference has been called in Frisco, a suburb of Dallas, to discuss a possible second case of Ebola.

According to a statement from the City of Frisco, the patient claims to have had contact with Thomas Eric Duncan, referred to as Dallas ‘patient zero.’

According to the CDC this is how smallpox is spread
Generally, direct and fairly prolonged face-to-face contact is required to spread smallpox from one person to another. Smallpox also can be spread through direct contact with infected bodily fluids or contaminated objects such as bedding or clothing. Rarely, smallpox has been spread by virus carried in the air in enclosed settings such as buildings, buses, and trains.

Sounds quite similar to Ebola, actually, except not quite so bad. :stickwhack Sen Frist.

I love all the "almost no chance", "would have to have had direct contact with the patient or body fluids" talk when it has already been stated that the virus can be spread from contact with clothing, blankets and door knobs ect. for hours minimally. It's all Lies, confusion and a deliberate effort to continually try to calm the public in one sentence and in the next warn people with symptoms not to walk in a public clinic but call 911. I'd say it's pretty contagious if you shouldn't even walk in a medical clinic. Sounds like you could just as easily catch it from a trip to the corner grocery store depending on who is there when you are or who had the grocery cart before you. It will be interesting to see how things develop in the coming days to say the least!
