I managed to dislodge a stubborn tonsil stone today using a bit of citric acid in a water syringe. I tried to find if anyone else had done the same thing using Google, but instead found this article on how the stones might be formed. It's just a theory but I thought it was interesting, especially because I have been really bad when it comes to keeping acids away from my teeth, and I've struggled with the stones for a while now.
Article here
"I believe a tonsil stone is an amalgam: an acid that has been coated/neutralized with calcium."
"I believe chronically-inflamed tonsils mean the person is chronically consuming acids." (My note: or not rinsing the mouth after consuming acids. This article's not gonna keep me away from coffee and OJ.)
The guy's other articles are a little...different, yet I found this one to be thought-provoking.
