Great post. I've been trying to get to the bottom of a gnarly inflammation in my skin for a long time. There's these hard growths just under the skin with blood underneath.

I have looked at every official condition and every picture out there. From scleroderma to angioedema etc, etc. The specialists were no help. Dermatologists just wanted to throw megadoses of antibiotics at it because it was supposed to be an infection. I knew it was inflammatory and I had tracked down a study in a dermatology journal about low-dose doxy (under 50 mgs a day). I think I posted it and I think you may have even replied.

But when I started looking at histamines and mast cell problems that's when I got onto the TNF-alpha. But the link in this post about TNF stimulating activation of MMPs in the skin really hit the mark. That's when the light went on. Over expression of the vegatative system; the collagenase and the dermal fibroblasts.

I don't think it really matters what the h it's really called but now I know I'm in the ballpark with it. Cypro and ketotifen sound good. All the other links are real interesting.

What's the deal with prescription TNF inhibitors? Any good? Brutal?

Here's a study I just found on the anti-endotoxic effect of cypro thru TNF inhibition.

Anti-endotoxic shock effects of cyproheptadine in rats. - PubMed - NCBI

i think i forgot to mention endotoxin here ,that lowering endotoxin and of course other toxins from intestines is probably the most important thing.the most basic one.

If travis’ theory about hair loss is correct, then all of these substances would help fight hair loss? I know he has talked about the hair growth inducing effects of cyclosporine, which is a powerful TNF inhibitor.

Great thread btw, thanks for putting this all together.

No i haven't. I dread having this looked at by the MDs. A dermatologist told me it was a bacterial infection and wanted to put me on megadoses of tetracycline.

A bacterial infection Ive had for 10 years? I'd be in sepsis and dead by now. Can even low-grade, functional sepsis and endotoxemia cause fibrosis? I don't think so but i could be wrong. But a bacterial infection that he's not even going to test for? It's like throwing something against the wall to see what sticks.

I'll have to go to a primary care MD and have her run an inflammatory profile and see what comes up. Maybe she could test endotoxin.

For now I'm just taking cyproheptadine and trying to keep my gut as clean as possible.

How do these compare to TNF blockers like Humira and Remicade ..especially for folks with autoimmune diseases like Ulcerative Colitis, Crohn's, RA etc..

@paymanz old post but interesting.

wonder how much tnf alpha is important for weight loss and what is lowering it the most in this context.

magnesium and zinc come first in there, there's evidence a high magnesium/zinc ratio will cause calcium uptake by cells (similar to high PTH???).

Magnesium and Zinc Intake Ratio Mediates the Increase of Coronary Artery Calcification through Upregulating Interleukin 6

they both increase metabolic rate :
