In the past year, I have taken to checking the ingredient list on my Trader Joe's purchases every time, and that has paid off recently. The red-wax coated Dutch Gouda that I had been buying no longer lists animal rennet. The aged Goudas are still animal rennet, but they are quite a different flavor and texture.

On the upside, though, I looked at a Canadian cheddar they stock and found animal rennet on the list. This was a surprise, because all their other cheddars--English, Irish, New Zealand, and American--are microbial rennet or some such. And sometimes you just need cheddar for a recipe.
