"The purpose of education is largely to disempower the student, so that they depend on the system and become reliable."
Ray Peat

At first this statement took me aback, thinking to myself, "Is Ray Peat anti-establishment?" Further pondering his words, it didn't take long for me to hear what he was saying. It makes sense he would say such a thing, after all he has, on many occasion, called out the medical establishment, which are composed of his peers, warning us of their "practices", with unnecessary pap smears, mammograms and cancer treatments. The oath of "First Do No Harm" is now a meaningless promise with never an apology. It is now so hard to find a good doctor like finding the pepper through fly poop.

Another similar tragedy is our school system, originally intended to teach, reading, writing, arithmatic and of a bigger world with endless posibilities! Now it's intention is to make everybody think and speak the same, like a Tower Of Babel, to make us, as Ray Peat said, "more reliable". Halfway through my two boy's education I realized the flaw in the system. Instead of looking for a person's strengths and fostering it to greatness, they put a cap on it with a pass to the next grade, and pull in the parents with concerns as to why "Little Johnny" isn't as good as the others in Math. The final punch line to the big joke is that original food pyramid, suggesting that each of us needs to do our part to have healthy American and get that loaf of bread in everyday, and work our way up that pyramid to the top where we get to have and little protein and sugar. Now 50 years later and ten fold fatter, the ignorant wipe crumbs from their mouth and call Ray Peat the crazy one?!!

I always knew something was amiss about that pyramid, but admittedly, they did fool me with the vegetables.

If you consider the Bell Curve, standing out of the crowd threatens people, especially the ones who want control. Asking "why" is a dangerous thing to do as it implies you are not accepting whatever tripe you're being fed. I could write a book on all that I've amassed on medical and biological knowledge in my 60 years but more importantly how I've put it to use in defiance of accepted medical nomenclature. Now I see the fear and rage growing again in those around me as I take no meds, have no issues, require no glasses and am still power lifting at a level far beyond most of the twenty somethings I encounter. Not being braggadocios, just self reliant and NEVER going to doctors. Most of what passes for medical fact is nothing more than Tom Foolery and hucksterism. And, yes, I did read your piece on alien observations regarding weight lifters. I take no offense, just wanted to age well and stay strong which seems to be happening.
To think for oneself is a dangerous proposition especially now with all the covidiots around.

It is SO refreshing to meet you Rick K! I am going on 58 in July and am also self-reliant. I like that term! I am always the one people thinks is crazy in my determination to cure my family's ails myself, the right way, while everyone else runs to the doc for everything and males so much conversation about their meds, as if it makes them more interesting. They are equally surprised when they find out I am not their equal in sister years, and old enough to be their mother, which sounds like you! I am glad you are as disgusted in the world's wackiness as I am. I am also glad that you enjoy lifting weights with no exuses. My words are just to put Ray Peat's words into play, and to let those who don't enjoy those things not feel they are the wrong ones. Even Ray Peat eats bacon! So I won't criticize your lifting if you don't criticize my being cautious in this Covid craze. Thank you so much wandering my way and the meeting of minds!

You're quite welcome. I don't criticize anyone's path; it's theirs to choose and live and mine is no better, just mine. I started out in life with a number of disadvantages: severe asthma, eczema and a myriad of allergies as well as being way too skinny (graduated high school at 6 ft tall and 135 pounds). Only when I took my health in my own hands did all that change. I have had zero allergies or asthma or eczema since my late teens. I generally stay out of the health discussions here because so many young people esp. men seem to have a myriad of problems, both physically and mentally and this is all very foreign to me. I tried for most of my life to help others and would write out extensive regimens of training and diet and supplements to right their ship and all to no avail until I realized (at 57) that they didn't really want my help. They were on...wait for it...their own path and that did not include self reliance. I was wrong to interfere and it was only ego disguised as benevolence that allowed me to believe that I was only trying to help. There is a member on this forum who goes by Hans. He is now who I used to be as far as Mr. Databank. People will amass tons of self-help information in so many areas and NEVER put it to use and grow with experience. So now I remain mute. My family members are actually horrified that I don't have a family doctor and never go to see one (But, but what if something's wrong, how would you know and what if it's too late?) I am not a doctor (thankfully) but adhere nonetheless to the adage: physician heal thyself. I gave up eating meat several years ago as I had long struggled with the morality of killing other sentient beings to eat them. Again, no judgement on others. I raised many different critters on my property, while married, for my wife's mobile petting zoo and I witnessed their love and loyalty and comradery and also their fear of death. Nuff said about that.
Surprisingly, most of my study on ageing has happened in the last three years because of friends complaining about their issues; something totally foreign to me. I hear about men, even those in their twenties, requiring Viagra and was just blown away by this; again all foreign. Clearly I live in a box under a bridge :).
Don't have a clue about Peat's diet recommendations as I discerned for myself what was good or not decades ago. I have read over some of his work on hormones and ageing and found it useful.
I silently bless everyone and recuse those who would harm others from my life (including parents) as I now live at great peace and have real happiness as I know it must come from within and have, thankfully, given up on the insane notion that I would get those things from others and achieve it that way (again, self reliant).
Thank you for reaching back out to me and feel free to anytime.

Me and my household don't have a family doctor either, not just because I am sure of how to fix things, but also because of the damage doctors have caused to others I know and love. I have never been an exercise fanatic, but I love long walks especially if halfway through there is a plate of scallops and a tequila waiting for me. I never bought into the glam stuff either, feeling like I look ridiculous in colorful nail polish and lipstick, and decided to take care of my hair rather than dye or bleach it. My health and appearance has come solely from food. I want to be an inspiration, not a cautionary tale. I look forward to future chats on other subjects!

When you have time Rick K, I would like to hear more about your eczema cure. I know a couple of sufferers that could some help with it.

Do you know how to reduce serotonin and prolactin? This is the key. Vitamin A/D are also important. 50,000 units vitamin a and 5,000 units d. I will ruminate more to see if I've forgotten anything

That was beautiful. Good read. Thank you.

Applying self-help information is no easy task imo. And the individuals path's not including self reliance may stem from alot of failure/dissapointments from oneself. A deep seated, lack of trust in one's own capabilities perhaps.

Avoiding meat is honorable, but may i ask what you are using as a source of protein, considering your are still lifting weights into a more advanced age?

Thank you for your kind response. I use whey protein and eat about a dozen eggs a day. I try to avoid seafood because of the contamination levels.
Self doubt, as you pointed out is crippling. Fear is an emotion of ego and nothing real but it is a powerful force that cripples people.

You almost got me there for a moment with your wording.
The normies are actually the ones calling us covidiots, and you probably implied that they (the normies / the mainstream) are the covidiots)

He's baaack... Ok, so definitely yes to increasing dopamine which will have an inverse effect on serotonin or decrease serotonin which will up your dopamine. The issue becomes more complex if the person involved is overweight as inflammation and high estrogen and prolactin will be adverse to healing. The A/D combo works wonders. Histamine is also generally high with eczema which can be a trigger as it can for asthma. I don't advocate a targeted approach but a shotgun one: getting healthy will start at gut level. Leaky gut will cause a cascade reaction with endotoxin and the resulting inflammation. I would also start on antibiotics and activated charcoal to wipe the bacteria slate clean. And then there's this: an anti-parasitic regimen. Having parasites can cause rosacea and eczema. There are natural protocols for this and then there's Ivermectin. If parasites are involved the condition may worsen temporarily before clearing but this stuff works wonders and if I were everyone I most certainly would use this every few months. Ivermectin and "fish cylin" can be obtained at Tractor Supply if your physician is uncooperative. Eat clean and avoid tap water at all costs as it is rife with SSRI's that tens of millions of annual prescriptions pass along into our drinking water. I buy bottled (glass) mineral water in the hope that it's less evil by a factor.
These are only my opinions of course as I am not allowed to recommend or state anything as I am not an MD (thank Christ). These are the things that I do/did.
Serotonin has proven links to auto-immune issues.

You're funny! My son has it and is in twentysomething and lean.. He is has eczema since late elementary school years. We did all the dermatologist that we could do, with no luck. Fish tablets finally cleared it up, but now he has histamine issues, I suspect from the fish oil, so that is not option again. We do have a gravity filter so the water is flouride free and void of everything else too. Switching to cotton has helped, but I hadn't heard of activated charcoal or the parasites. I can use MSM to address possibles, but i have heard conflicting opinion on activated charcoal. How much did you use of it?

Charcoal: about a teaspoon full. If your son developed this at that stage in his life then I would strongly consider parasites. This is an ignored medical issue in the west with the assumption that third world countries are the only ones afflicted with it. Fish oil is a PUFA and should be set on fire and stomped to death. So many health practitioners recommend Omega 3 as an EFA and it most assuredly is not. Don't know if your water filter can removed meds. I have a similar filter which is supposed to remove all fluoride and lead etc but meds are not electrostatic and without testing the water I don't know if they are in mine hence the bottled mineral water. I went through the gamut of meds and cotton and special soaps and diets all recommended by dermatologists and nothing helped from their end, Doctors still claim they don't know what causes eczema. I want to emphasize that being lean does not mean being healthy. Remember that I was 135 lbs at 6 ft tall. If I turned sideways I looked like the letter I and yet I had all my aforementioned maladies. Histamine will trigger an outbreak, as I mentioned before. If you struggle to accept the SSRI possibility then please consider the logarithmic increase in mental illness and anxiety in the last few decades. I realize the media constantly pumps a fear narrative but the more people that take this poison the more the rest of us are exposed to it through the drinking water and serotonin is a significant contributor to auto-immune (as well as mental illness). Wanted to cite a few articles from this form but the search engine is having issues. In 2005 I had a recurrence of eczema and it was so bad that it went from the back of my knees all the way up my back and I was bleeding through my clothes. I had a life that was horrifically stressful at that time and a Chinese internist told me to stay away from meat and gave me a prescription for an herbal concoction. I did lay off of meat for a short while, did not buy the herbs this doctor wrote out for me as there was no place in the Charlotte area to do so but did go through an anti parasitic regime and avoided the GABA products I used as they cause a histamine release and I was right as rain in no time. If you search this forum you will find a number of people use antibiotics and charcoal to wipe the bacteria slate clean. The meds that doctors prescribe simply quell your immune system which is a very dangerous practice. What we are on the outside is a reflection of what we are on the inside.

Also pays to look into mold possibility. In 2005 I was feeding hay to my horses and sometimes the hay had mold. My kids also had parasites as we had a passel 'o' animals. The anti parasitic cleared up their warts (a sign of tapeworm).
