I've been telling myself that the real virus is fear, which is what the narrative is ultimately supposed to generate. Fear of infection, fear manifesting in distrust of your neighbors and family, fear of collapse and chaos, etc. A scared man will accept anything. Any yoke—no matter how humiliating, oppressive, or dehumanizing—will be happily donned by the herd-man so long as it quells his animal fright.
