Fertilizer Production: Cradle to Grave Pollution

Phosphogypsum, too radioactive to be used, is stored in mountainous stacks, often referred to as "gypstacks," that are hundreds of acres wide and hundreds of feet tall.

One billion tons of phosphogypsum are stacked in Florida alone, though other states in the Southeast and West also have gypstacks. Gypstacks are prone to groundwater contamination, dike breeches, leakage, and sinkholes.

Radiation and Phosphoric Acid

• The phosphoric acid produced in Florida contains much of the uranium that was present in the mined ore, but little of the radium.

• In the past, uranium was valuable enough that extraction facilities at the chemical plant sites were used to concentrate and remove it from the phosphoric acid as a solid product. Since the uranium is present only at trace quantities, this was an expensive process.

• Removal of uranium as a product is no longer profitable and all of the extraction facilities have been dismantled. The uranium that remains in the phosphoric acid and fertilizer products is at a low enough level that it is safe for use.

Florida Billboard Launched to Raise Awareness of Radioactive Toxic Waste

ARCADIA, Fla.— A new billboard message highlighting the risks phosphate mining and phosphogypsum pose to communities, water and the environment has been installed along State Route 70 in DeSoto County. The 36-foot-wide billboard directs motorists to www.RadioactiveFlorida.org.

“The Piney Point disaster was a wake-up call for Florida. We have an out-of-control problem with phosphate mining and phosphogypsum,” said Jaclyn Lopez, Florida director at the Center. “With the sprawling mine proposed in DeSoto County and the planned 200-plus-acre expansion of the sinkhole-prone New Wales phosphogypsum storage stack, it’s past time for regulators to step up and protect Floridians from this poorly regulated industry.”
