Incidence of GI and brain bleeding events has been increasing over the last 30 years.Aspirin was blamed the increase of both the brain and GI bleeding events. Recent studies seem to have vindicated aspirin a bit, but the question remains about what is causing the increased incidence of brain and GI bleeding. This new study seems to point the finger at SSRI drugs, at least when it comes to brain bleeding. While serotonin increases platelet aggregation and can cause ischemic stroke, it also weakens the blood vessel walls and as such can lead to leakage or even rupture of the vessel. So, an SSRI drug can potentially give a person stroke of both types (ischemic and hemorrhaging) - a remarkably dangerous / bad combination.

"...A new study published in JAMA Neurology reports that treatment with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and antidepressants in general with strong inhibition of serotonin reuptake is associated with a greater risk of intracranial hemorrhage. SSRIs have been previously linked to an increase in intracranial hemorrhage, however, whether antidepressants that are strong inhibitors of serotonin reuptake actually raise the risk for intracranial hemorrhage is still unknown."

Another knock against SSRIs and serotonin . One day in the future people will look back and wonder how on earth this poison was ever prescribed as a way to treat illness. Hopefully not too distant future.

Big Pharma gets away with murder, the entire branch of psychiatry appears to rest upon questionable DSM diagnoses, and corresponding psychiatric medication. Medication that only needs to edge out placebo, in trials funded largely by the manufacturer.

...and as we have been finding out recently even those trials were (mostly) done fraudulently. So, it is not better than placebo. Not sure if you know but SSRI drugs are banned in some countries due to common knowledge there that serotonin is dangerous.

Wow, talk about conflict of interest. Good to know.

Which countries?

Malaysia, Vietnam, Russia (some of the SSRI, not all), many Middle Eastern countries, UK (ban only covers children so far but calls have been made for complete ban), Estern European countries like Slovenia/Serbia/Hungary (again not all SSRI are banned but some are), Central Asian countries including most of the *stans. I am sure the list is not complete as there is absolutely no incentive for any organization to do a study or create a list for which countries ban SSRI drugs.
