It was such a massive pain gutting and cleaning dozens of squids (With a 4yo, 2yo, and 1yo underfoot) that I just discarded everything except the bodies and tentacles and some ink sacs. I may try again in a couple years when children are older. The heads plus the thin flat piece of cartilage that forms the backbone may have the makings of a good broth.

I like preparing and eating squid, though. Way less messy than fish. Squid present almost more like plants than animals. I kept thinking of how apt is the Italian phrase of “frutti di mare” ... fruit of the sea ... as a epithet for shell fish and invertebrates
