Why Live + Eat Seasonally?

When we adjust our diet and lifestyle to match the season, health-promoting digestive microbes dramatically change. Spring microbes support balanced immunity, digestion, mood, energy, blood sugar, weight, sleep, and much more.

Spring is associated with the qualities of kapha: heavy, cold and oily. To stay balanced, focus on foods and activities that are light, dry, and warm.

Kapha Tips

  • Eat more foods that are Pungent (Spicy), Bitter, Astringent / Light, Dry, Warm: such as flavorful steamed veggies, brothy soups, brown rice.
  • Eat less foods that are Sweet, Sour, Salty / Heavy, Cold, Oily: such as fried foods, ice cream, heavy dairy, breads.

Signs of Excess Kapha

  • Cold
  • Cough
  • Allergies
  • Congestion
  • Flu
  • Fatigue
  • Depression
  • Weight gain

Kapha Body Type Characteristics

  • Large frame, heavy, easy to gain weight.
  • Thick, straight / wavy, oily hair.
  • Oily, moist, pale, white skin.
  • Large eyes, whites of eyes are glossy and white.
  • Medium to large, white and strong teeth.
  • Slow and steady walking pace.
  • Excellent strength and endurance.
  • Calm, steady disposition, long-term memory, low pitch / resonating voice.
  • Steady non-changing moods, slow to get irritated, very understanding, easy-going.
  • Can miss a meal easily, digestion can be a little slow; elimination is heavy, slow, thick, and regular.
  • Aversion to damp and cold weather.
  • Prefers dry food and eats slowly.
  • Saves money regularly and accumulates wealth.
  • Strong sex drive.
  • Sound, heavy and long sleep, dreams of water, clouds, and romance.

Spring and Kapha Grocery List

  • Choose organic and non-GMO when possible.
  • Curious about a food not on this list? Taste it. If it has two of the three spring tastes (pungent/spicy, bitter, astringent), it is balancing. Prepare it in a way that is light, warm, and dry.
  • Eat more of your favorite foods from this list.
  • Though these are not the only items you can eat, they are the most beneficial foods for this season/dosha.
  • These foods are most beneficial for spring because they have qualities that balance spring (kapha). Even if they are not harvested in your region during spring (or any season), their qualities are still balancing. If you wish to take it to the next level, you can choose to eat more local foods, but you do not have to.
  • *An asterisk means that this food is a Spring Superfood. If you like it, eat more of it.

This is a wonderful post! It makes sense to eat seasonally, since nature intended us to eat what NATURALLY grows during different times of the year. I love hot coffee in the cold months, but not at all during warmer months, so I drink it iced instead. Fruits in general aren’t too appealing to me either during the cold months. How does the Winter list compare to the Spring list?

How does the Winter list compare to the Spring list?
Winter is associated with the qualities of vata, which are cold, air, dryness, and lightness. Vata is characterized by using up too much energy or resources, and is therefore catabolic (spring is anabolic).

Winter and Vata Grocery List

  • Eat more foods that are Sweet, Sour, Salty / Heavy, Oily, Moist, Hot: such as soups, stews, steamed veggies, and more fat and protein.
  • Eat less foods that are Pungent (Spicy), Bitter, Astringent / Light, Cold, Dry: such as salads, smoothies, cold foods and beverages, crackers, chips and salsa.
  • Curious about a food not on this list? Taste it. If it has 2 of the 3 winter tastes (sweet, sour and salty), it is balancing. Prepare it in a way that is moist, oily, heavy and/or warm.
  • *An asterisk means that this food is a Winter Superfood. If you like it, eat more of it.

It all lines up with what I typically feel like eating during those months, except for the avocado. In cold or hot weather guacamoles sounds good to me :)
